In Which Jenn Regroups With A New Goal

For awhile, there was the small but real possibility that I might be able to move to Orlando. Last week that hope was dashed.

So - what does one do in the wake of such a disappointment? Regroup, of course! First, I must remind myself that as much as I would die for year-round warmth and Walt Disney World proximity, there are good things about staying where I am. I like my current job. Moving is hard, especially over long distances. My friends are here (and are hereby not allowed to move anywhere without my permission). And, ever irreplaceable, my wonderful ballet studio community is here.

Therefore I am throwing myself into a new and different goal. My ballet teacher has asked all of us in the senior performance group to select and learn a variation (or brief solo piece). After some deliberation, I have selected the following:

I'm pretty strong en pointe - I mean, for an amateur anyway - and Ashton's choreography is more artistic than technically difficult; I love the arms throughout. And who can say no to a score composed by Prokofiev? NO ONE CAN SAY NO TO PROKOFIEV. (Except for Soviet-era government officials but that's something else entirely).

Anyway. Yeah. I shall erase past disappointments with a new triumph. And since everyone knows that personal blogs primarily exist for accountability, I can hardly not triumph. In May, I shall be the summer fairy from Cinderella. OR ELSE.

How do you erase past disappointments?

The Fairest Week In Review: 3/25

MOON: So, let's blog?

JENN: Indeed. How was your running this week?

MOON: Ehhhhhhhh.

JENN: You get much in?

MOON: Yeah, I went to the gym about 6 times. My left leg has been a little spotty.

JENN: Oh dear. Recurring injury?

MOON: Yeah, it's been like this for about a week, maybe a bit longer.

JENN: Hmmm. Might wanna rest a bit.

MOON: Maaaaaybe. How was your week?

JENN: I think "Ehhhhhh" about sums it up. I got my mileage in but I'm still way slow. Nonetheless, we soldier on.

MOON: I suppose. Here's to a better week!

JENN: Indeed. Any good music to report?

MOON: Well, today I begin delving into Israeli techno. I suppose next week I'll have some opinions.

JENN: Ha, it's nice to know there are things to look forward to in life. Bonus points if you can offer us some Israeli dance moves to match. I understand they have some pretty sweet line dances.

MOON: I'm sure I'll find out!

JENN: Video to follow, I'm sure. Meanwhile, despite being the only person on earth who was lukewarm on Frozen, hopefully it will help you all to know that I've been listening to "Let It Go" a lot during my runs. Even if the cold does bother me. IT IS ACTIVELY SNOWING RIGHT NOW IT'S ALMOST APRIL WHYYY

THIS IS NOT SPRING

And on that note, roundup.

- Because I am an optimist at heart, Run Eat Repeat has advice for running in HOT weather.

Photographic Memory: Terror In Radiator Springs

JENN: It's a Photographic Memory! This is the on-ride photo from our trip on Radiator Springs Racers in Disney's California Adventure. I was initially super bummed when I realized I had forgotten to include this in the relevant portion of our trip report, but then I realized it was a golden Photographic Memory opportunity.

Moon is in the picture. Trust me.

MOON: It appears I'm hiding! That one is pretty recent. CA, right?

JENN: Yup, from our trip in January. Do you recall your experience on Radiator Springs Racers?

MOON: Hmm, well, I was expecting it to be pretty much the same as the Epcot ride.

JENN: Test Track, you mean?

MOON: Yeah. I remember there was a hill and that made things unhappy for me. I'm a HUGE baby.

JENN: Oh, there was not. There were DIPS. This is not the same.

MOON: You say dip, I say die.

JENN: But I just want to point out the photographic evidence that I protected you!

MOON: That you did! I survived to tell the tale.

JENN: Did you feel safer? Do you feel safer for the future, knowing I'm there?

MOON: I would give it another try if you're there. ;)

The Fairest Week In Review: 3/18

JENN: Let me start by saying I HAVE NEW SNEAKERS.

MOON: Yay! Did you pick a new style?

JENN: Nope, stuck with the Brooks Ravennas.

MOON: Did you try anything new?

JENN: I haven't experienced any knee or hip pain with them - at least not, as far as I can tell, because of them - so I'm keeping 'em for now. I will detail the wonder of their speedy and fiscally responsible arrival later this week, but let me just say now that they are PURPLE with NEON YELLOW LACES. Magnificent. Why be staid we you can be eye-searing?

MOON: Haha, nice!

JENN: How was your training last week?

MOON: Not too bad, not too great. Kinda... eh?

JENN: Right there with you.

MOON: I'm confident you'll have renewed motivation this week!

JENN:
I have great hope that my new sneakers will help with this. And that someone will develop a pill so that I can nap while running at top speeds.

MOON: Ha, a story about that.

JENN:
You can nap while running?! TEACH ME.

MOON: So, Ambien. You know my sleeping problems. And this is probably delving into areas not for the public blososphere, but if you take the pill and don't go to sleep immediately, you tend to stay awake. Buuuut, you won't remember. This happened twice this week. I didn't do it intentionally, of course. The pill just doesn't work well for me.

JENN: Hmmm. Were they good runs?

MOON: Oh, I didn't run (that I know of). Next time you're over, maybe we can give it a whirl as long as you supervise. For science!

JENN: Ah, good. We've reached the gritty drug abuse portion of our blog evolution.

MOON: Every blog has to go there eventually.

JENN: Indeed. Well, on to the roundup then.

- Everyone's up in arms about the new runDisney policy forbidding packet pickup by proxy, but Margarita, Miles & the Mouse told me first so here's that post.

-
Fairytales & Fitness recommends the races that offer the best value.
- For the Love of Disney Running describes what it's like to chEAR!
- Running Toward the Prize discusses learning to increase speed - lord knows I need the help.
- MousePlanet considers what it takes to be Dopey.
- The Disney Hipsters talk about - SQUIRREL!

The Fairest Week In Review: 3/11

JENN: First things first: I must apologize for the slow blog week previous. Things got a little hectic and I fell down on the job. But as Rafiki so wisely says: What does it matter? It's in the past! So I soldier on.

MOON: I'm sure your adoring fans were on the edge of their seats. All is well, here you are!

JENN:
Did you run at all this week?

MOON: Almost every day!

JENN: Awesome! Any particularly noteworthy incidents?

MOON: I ran with Christian twice, with Liz once! I couldn't ask for better company (with the exception of you, of course!). It's getting warmer. We need to schedule a run together outdoors soon.

How was running for you this week? Are your runs improving?

JENN: A LITTLE bit. I ran an experiment last week: I swapped out my shoe inserts for the regular inserts that came with my sneakers. These are less impressive but had never been used. My runs since then have improved marginally. Now as we all know, correlation does NOT necessarily imply causation - but I think I might be in need of a new pair of sneakers.

Actually, I've probably BEEN in need of new sneakers, but what I might be experiencing now are the effects of that need.

Dying.

MOON: Hmm, I've actually been alternating between old shoes and new shoes to see if I notice a huge difference. However, my results don't carry much weight because I haven't done any long runs (over 7 miles).

JENN: Any good music?

MOON: Nothing much to report for this past week. Althoughhhh, I do have a new running mix to try out this week.

JENN: Nice! I got the Firefly theme song stuck in my head, so I listened to that a bunch. I'm old school. Also, you can't take the sky from me.

MOON: ... You've lost me. But, you also know how I feel about Firefly.

JENN: Take my love, take my land, take me where I cannot stand? No, actually. How do you feel about Firefly?

MOON: :/ That emoticon sums it up pretty well.

JENN: Haha, fair enough. I do like the theme song, though.

MOON: I actually don't recall it very well. You know what I wish I could do while running? Read.

JENN: Yeeeeah. That doesn't work.

MOON: I knnnnnow. :( I've tried so many times. Even making the text on the nook app as big as possible.

JENN: Too jolty. I can walk while reading if it's not too fast but that's it.

And on that happy note - on to the roundup!

- Consider pre-marathon fueling with Run Eat Repeat.
- Learn home to manage non-runners on a running trip from Pink Elephant on Parade.
- Speaking of non-runners, Running Toward the Prize explains how to be the best cheering squad ever.
- Get to the point of my beloved Mulan much faster with the Disney Hipster Blog.

The Fairest Week In Review: 3/04

JENN: So, the big news of the week, runDisney-wise, was that there is a new half marathon at Disneyland themed to - wait for it - The Avengers. Your thoughts?

MOON: I did laugh out loud when I got that email in my inbox. And no, I haven't seen the movie.

JENN: Me neither. I... don't care. Like at all. I have no desire to run this race. Unless runDisney wants to pay for it. I'll be over here holding my breath.

MOON: Hm. I'd rather do ANYTHING else in CA, thank you very much.

JENN: But a lot of people are into superheroes, I guess, so I'm sure there'll be an audience.

MOON: Then there's two opens spaces for the fans!

JENN: Hey, I guess we save money by our lack of enthusiasm, so that's something.

MOON: The glass is half full.

JENN: Oh, and Wine and Dine Half Marathon registration opened to the public today, although I'd already pre-registered using my handy-dandy WDW Annual Pass privileges. I hope you can come!

MOON: Me too!

JENN: How's your training been going?

MOON: Not bad! I've been making an effort to get to the gym at least 5 days a week. I'm venturing into weights, we'll see how long my arms last.

JENN: I did some of that that too, out of necessity, since my running has been sucking lately - I wanted to feel like I was accomplishing SOMETHING. I took a total recharge day during the snow day, so hopefully that helps. We'll see how next week goes.

MOON: The treadmill is just too boring. The warm weather approaches, I KNOW IT. I think that will do us some good.

JENN: Heeere's hoping. You bust out of your music rut?

MOON: No, not entirely. But last week I had Liz to run with, that was a nice change. I had run a good amount before she arrived and it surprised me how much of a second wind I got when she got there.
I advocate for running buddies.

JENN: I spent the week listening to Flogging Molly. As is so often the case. BUT. This time it was in preparation for seeing them in concert! IT WAS AWESOME.

I recognize that that photo is pretty irrelevant to what this blog is ostensibly about, but I don't care. I put the post together so I do what I want!

Anyway! Roundup.

- Prairie Princess Runners offer healthy travel tips. (Although I once went to the gym at 11:30PM after a conference event, so everything can be overcome! ;)
- Run Eat Repeat ponders: can you be addicted to running?
- Half Crazy Mama helps with your treadmill woes. And once you've read that, try my treadmill interval method post - I hear it's helped a couple people!
- Speaking of speed, This Runner's Trials has a great discourse on why it doesn't ultimately matter.
- Food Fitness Fantasy has a wonderful post honoring National Eating Disorder Awareness Week.
- Compress with Pink Elephant on Parade. I think I might need to try some of this KT Tape...
- Experience a runDisney race retreat with I Run For Wine.
