The Fairest Week In Review: 6/24

JENN: So how has the running been?

MOON: Not too bad, how about you?

JENN: Last week was actually surprisingly good. I wound up covering about 40 miles over the course of the week, which is 7 - 10 more than my average. Mind you, it helped that it was a no-ballet week. Ballet starts again today, so I doubt I'll be repeating such high numbers.

MOON: That is many miles.

JENN: Yeah, and some of 'em were a little faster than my recent sub par times! And some were slower. But whatever. I even tried the speedwork I talked about last week. I'm not entirely sure I'm doing it right, but I took a shot.

MOON: Well done!

JENN: The only thing I did NOT do last week was run outside again. I intend to correct this issue in the coming days (even though I'm still dubious about this "outdoors" of which you speak).

MOON: Excited to begin ballet again?

JENN: Yeah, I feel like it helps a lot to get all that stretching in and activate different muscles. You're welcome to come to class with me again sometime! I'm taking Nicole to the adult beginner class tonight. Everybody's doing it!

BALLET!

MOON: Haha, but my dignity...

JENN: Nonsense. There is no dignity in adult beginner class. I myself plan to fall on my face at least once. Two weeks of no practice makes for some stiff muscles.

MOON: Yes, and I applaud your dedication. But I like to appreciate ballet from a distance, ha!

JENN: Fair enough. Someday I'll get you!

MOON: You can try!

JENN: Meanwhile, get these posts from the roundup:

In Which Jenn Receives A WDW Gift

Hey, remember that time I helped my boss plan her Walt Disney World vacation? And she invented WWJGD?

Well, she's tragically not my boss anymore, but I did have breakfast with her last week and she brought me back a present from the trip!

How awesome is this travel mug? I love the Mary Blair-esque design. I don't generally drink coffee unless I'm at a latte-producing coffee shop, but this'll be perfect if I ever want to build myself a yogurt parfait to go. But most of all, I love that I earned it by telling my boss which characters were at which breakfasts and exactly which FastPass+ selections she needed to make.

In conclusion: your WDW-attending friends, relatives, and coworkers NEED YOUR EXPERTISE. Spread your wealth of knowledge and Disney travel mugs will RAIN DOWN ON YOU.

The Fairest Week In Review: 6/17

MOON: Ooookay. Tell me about your runs!

JENN: They have been relatively decent! HUGE factor: the air conditioning the gym finally kicked in. Air conditioning not on? Crazy humid, runs suck. Air conditioning on? WHEEEEEE I CAN RUN.

MOON: Ha, I realized that too in the beginning of the week. Our air conditioner seems to be spotty. Sometimes on and glorious or just not at all.

JENN: I'm still working outdoor runs into my schedule, but it's hard to convince myself to get up early. Just not my bag. Unfortunately the temperatures of late have been way too high for afternoon running. Mind you, I wouldn't trade summer for ANYTHING, but it does make for trickier maneuvering.

MOON: I don't mind the heat, but I would rather not be in the sun. Awkward tans and all that. My nose is still recovering from the Negev...

JENN: Yes, a shadier route can be way helpful. I have a total t-shirt tan from the beach last month. Terrible.

MOON: Ha, at least it isn't a burn!

JENN: ... Anymore...

MOON: Ah, I seeee. Soooo, what are your plans for the week? Any goals?

JENN: Don't suck. I haven't been sucking too hard lately. I would like to keep that up. Oh, and continue to work outdoor runs into the plan. Regardless of how little I feel like it at 6AM. You?

MOON: Don't suck is a good plan. I like this plan. I'm hoping to work really hard this week. Get my mileage back up, but also work on strength.

JENN: I'm playing with the idea of speedwork today but it scares me... O.o

MOON: Do it! It feels good, even if you don't go as far.

JENN: Haha, yeah, that's what makes me sad. BUT. With any luck it'll be the last push I need to get back up to last year's speeds.

MOON: Endurance will improve with speed, it's just like when we started running. :)

JENN: True. Back to basics it is, then.

MOON: Good luck!

JENN: Good luck also conferred to the roundup:

- Girls, hold up your girls while running - Fairytales 'n Fitness has sports bra suggestions.
- The Runner's Guide to WDW considers staying club level when running Disney.
- Pink Elephant on Parade points out that slow people are, have always been, and always will be a thing. (Like me. I am a thing.)
- Food Fitness Fantasy visits good ol' California Grill. (I did that too!)
- Eating WDW makes naaaaaaaaan from Sanaaaaaaaaaa! Make it. Make it right now.
- Mouse on the Mind loves Gay Days and rainbows. Who doesn't?
- The Disney Hipsters point out that Ursula does what she wants.

In Which Jenn Makes The Cheater's Veggie Sandwich

For this cheater's recipe, you don't even have to use a microwave. In fact, in the spirit of my IKEA assembly instruction foods, I'm essentially going to tell you: make a caprese sandwich. Only a little better. With More Veggies, you can feel More Healthy, plus More Fueled with carbs from the bread and protein from the cheese. You can add the pesto spread back in for the bread if you want, but I swapped in olive oil and spices for heart-healthy fats. Hotcha!

The Cheater's Veggie Sandwich

You will need:
  • Two slices of good mozzarella
  • One tomato
  • One cucumber
  • A handful of spinach
  • A small loaf of French bread, white or wheat
  • Olive oil
  • Italian spice blend (plus a little salt if you want, to taste)
  1. Cut your bread loaf into the size sandwich you want, if necessary. Slice it lengthwise and then pull a bit of the innards out to make room for the fillings. (I recommend you eat the scraps with extra olive oil.)
  2. Place the two mozzarella rounds on the bottom piece of bread. Then eat a couple more slices because mozzarella is delicious.
  3. Artfully arrange your spinach leaves on top of the mozzarella.
  4. Slice your tomato and cucumber up and then add as many pieces of those as you like atop the spinach.
  5. THIS LAST PART IS CLUTCH. DO NOT SKIP IT. Drizzle olive oil over the veggies and then sprinkle with your Italian spice blend and maybe a dash of salt if you want.
  6. Place the top slice of bread over the whole shebang, cut down the middle, and enjoy!

What's your favorite sandwich recipe?

The Fairest Week In Review: 6/10

JENN: How did your training go this week?

MOON: Well, I ran every day! It was good.

JENN: Awesome!I ran outside a bunch this week. I'm getting a LITTLE better at it, anyway. I'm not ready to let go of the treadmill just yet, but the outdoors is growing on me. I just hope I DON'T come to prefer running outside because that'll make indoor winter running so sad! I'll need to find a coping mechanism.

I can't answer this question, but I like that Captain Picard is asking it.

MOON: I prefer the outdoors and winter sucks, but winter sucks regardless. The treadmill will be there when you need it. :)

JENN: True! I'll just have to find some GREAT music to distract me.You got any?

MOON: I've been listening to Arcade Fire. They are very singable and this is good for running. Well, I'm not sure what the general consensus about running and singing is, buuuuut I like it.

JENN: I've heard a lot about them but never really pursued their music. Any track recommendations?

MOON: Hmm, if you're starting from this album: start at the beginning with the title song, "Reflektor."

JENN: I'll have to investigate that.

Although worthy of investigation? The roundup.

- Disney Every Day follows up on the newly announced Disneyland Paris half.
- Run Eat Repeat runs FASTER.
- Running at Disney offers more yoga for runners.
- Food Fitness Fantasy ponders her running journey.
- Mouse on the Mind tries some amazing Disney-themed Starbucks drinks.
- The Disney Tourist Blog reviews Disney's Yacht Club resort - so excited to stay there in January!
- The Disney Hipsters take a ride on our beloved Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover.

In Which Jenn Ponders the Lack of Brinner in WDW

Walt Disney World is the place where dreams come true, and this goes for all things culinary. Wish fulfillment: giant cupcakes, cuisines from all around the world, rivers of plastic cheese. And yet there is one thing it simply does not offer.

I'm talkin' 'bout brinner.

Seriously, think about it. What breakfast items will WDW sell you past 11AM? Sleepy Hollow has waffle sandwiches and a waffle dusted with powdered sugar, but nary a bottle of maple syrup or a sausage link to be seen. The AMC in Downtown Disney has a waffle ice cream sundae, but that's dessert - and while I am a major proponent of dessert, that is not brinner. I think House of Blues has chicken and waffles, and that's getting closer, but even then you're still looking at half a plate of fried chicken and that is not brinner.

A collection of designer waffles adapted to other recipes simply does not brinner make (especially when they're not those awesome mini Mickey head waffles. Where are those once noon rolls around?). Brinner requires eggs and bacon and sausage and hash browns as side options, for starters. And anyway, what about omelets? And pancakes? PANCAKES ARE IMPORTANT.

And for that matter, where is the french toast? Why won't the Kona Cafe give me Tonga toast at 8PM??? Doesn't that seem wrong?

Am I missing something? Is there some secret restaurant in WDW that will give me breakfast food whenever I want it? Do they not realize that breakfast food is the BEST food? Is the brinner nook hiding from me? C'mon, WDW - fill this void!

The Fairest Week In Review: 6/03

MOON: I JUST RAN 3.5 MILES

JENN:
YEEEEEEEAH TELL ME ABOUT YOUR 3.5 MILES

MOON: Well, generally uneventful. There were awkward repairmen in the gym all up on my treadmill while I was running.

JENN: Oh, yes, that's always a little weird.

MOON: You're probably thinking, "3.5... whoopee." Buuuut, I haven't run since my return from Israel. Yesterday I found myself really missing it.

JENN: Hey, anything is better than nothing! :D Just gotta build it back up.

MOON: It won't be too hard, I think. Last week 1 miles was easy (I seriously had like 8 minutes to run before an appointment). Today 3.5 was pretty easy.

JENN: Awesome! You and Christian are looking for a race to run together, right?

MOON: Yeah!

JENN: Any contenders?

MOON: There's one in Chicago I think I might like... It's a half. I need to go to Chicago at some point, so it might work out.

How was your week?

JENN: I've been running outside more than usual and it's weird. I am SO MUCH FASTER on a treadmill. On the other hand, I think it's really important that I improve my handling of actual real word incline and terrain. I mean, right now my handling of said incline is still "walk for a bit," but baby steps, baby steps.

MOON: I agree.

JENN: Any good music on your 3.5 MILE RUN?

MOON: A mixture of things, but I'm currently delving into remixes. Nothing too notable without context. You?

JENN: Not... really. I need to step up my musical game.

Step up your blog reading game with the roundup:

- Running at Disney plots a better WDW 10K course.
- Pink Elephant on Parade reconsiders KT Tape.
- Run Eat Repeat keeps it calm pre-race.
- Half Crazy Mama considers runner-specific conversations.
- A Pinch of Pixie Dust has an update on afternoon tea at the Grand Floridian! We LOVE afternoon tea at the Grand Floridian!
- I haven't had it yet, but I assume I will also <3 Tipsy Ducks in Love as highlighted by the Disney Hipsters.
