The Fairest Week In Review: 4/27

Good news and bad news time, guys. Traditionally I like bad news first, and the bad news is that we probably won't see Moon in the Week In Review for awhile - she's in the process of packing up her life and quite literally shipping up to Boston. She's gonna concentrate on that transition for a bit, and then no doubt be back and better than ever with wonderful new running routes to tell us all about!

Now for the good news. Here it is:

I know - you're all sooooo surprised. At least I pulled the proverbial trigger a lot quicker this year! Although I flirted with Goofy, I'm just doing the marathon again - more on that decision process at a later date. I'll probably do another quick-turnaround weekend a la last time. The 2016 WDW Marathon was one of my favorite races ever, and I'm already looking forward to 2017! Who else will be there?!

And on that more positive note, I give you: the roundup.

- Pink Elephant on Parade wonders if we shouldn't think a little less about the finish line and a little more about not dying.
- Back At Square Zero does some big city racing.
- ImagiNERDing adds to your Disney reading list.
- Rolling with the Magic rounds up the best WDW bars.
- The Main Street Gazette highlights the beauty of Disney's Animal Kingdom.
- The Disney Tourist Blog has the latest on WDW's summer updates.
- The Disney Hipsters share the vegetarian wonders the Disney Cruise Line has to offer.
- The Disney Nerds eat in Tokyo Disneyland.

The Last Photos: WDW & Disneyland, 2013 - 2016

Continuing my Last Photos series, because I can never get enough nostalgia. This catches us up!

The year: 2013
The companion(s): Moon
The title of the album: I Know Every Mile Will Be Worth My While
The why: The trip that started it all: Princess Half Marathon 2013! As we left our scene of triumph to be whisked away by a Magical Express bus, we passed magnificent chalk art by a very talented Cast Member.

The year: 2013
The companion(s): My mom
The title of the album: Look for the bare necessities
The why: The only trip in this list without a race attached. Sitting in the Orlando airport, sulking as we waited for our plane to be called. Trying desperately to cling to the magic by uploading photos to my computer. If you look closely you can see beautiful human-free shots of the Magic Kingdom, courtesy of our early Crystal Palace breakfast ADR that morning.

The year: 2014
THE PLACE: DISNEYLAND!
The companions: Moon
The title of the album: You can fly! You can fly! You can fly!
The why: My first time in Disneyland for the Tinker Bell Half Marathon! Technically our last photos were taken inside an empty movie theater, but as this is boring I'm cheating and offering this final look at the Disneyland entrance sign.

The year: 2014
The companion(s): Many wonderful bloggers and buddies
The title of the album: Y'know, for a clownfish he's not that funny
The why: My first Wine & Dine Half! My final photo was one of grief. That seems to be the running theme here, no? I'm fairly certain I remember taking this out the window of the ME bus itself. No, I was not arriving. :(

The year: 2015
The companion(s): My boyfriend
The title of the album: Thank you, Florida (where my Silicon Valley peeps at?)
The why: Dopey Challenge trip! We killed a little time waiting for our ME bus by grabbing a few drinks in Port Orleans Riverside's River Roost bar. Naturally I got an Abita Purple Haze, because ABITA PURPLE HAZE. Oh, and our bartender's name was Talon, which is pretty awesome.

The year: 2015
The companion(s): Elizabeth
The title of the album: The thingamabob that does the job
The why: Oh, Wine & Dine Quarter Marathon. I snapped this photo of my dress because it was garnering a lot of compliments. Guys, I'm telling you: Hot Topic. Don't be ashamed.

The year: 2016
The companion(s): None!
The title of the album: A very merry unbirthday to me
The why: My quick, park-less weekend jaunt for the WDW Marathon ended with my riding the monorail on loop. It's your highway in the sky!

There you have it - all the final photos of which I have some record. I can't wait to see what future trips hold! In the meantime, maybe I'll take a look at first photos... keep tuning in to find out!

In Which Jenn Wants To Make Saltface Happen

News flash: it was warm enough for me to go on a MORNING OUTDOOR RUN last week. Awwwww man. Don't get me wrong, I wore wore sleeves and long pants, but still.

I was coming in from my run just as my boyfriend was jetting off to work. He gave me a goodbye kiss, which he followed up with "Ew." To which I replied: "HAHAHAHA DELICIOUS" because I am a delightful girlfriend. What I'm trying to get at here is: SALTFACE.

You know what I'm talking about, right? You go for a long run, you really go for it, and somehow when you come back your face - your lips, your brows, your eyes - is crusted with a sweaty, salty melange of yuckiness.

Runner's World assures us this is caused by a diet that is high in liquids and low in sodium; salty sweaters are doing well on the hydration front, plus we're sweating hard so we're working hard, right? Go us! Though we should probably add a bit more sodium to our diets for performance purposes.

But back the immediate topic: the resulting face paste. Is there a word for it? Do we not have an official portmanteau? WHY NOT? Saltface isn't particularly flashy or clever, but it's straightforward and it gets the job done. Use it! Like this!
FRIEND: How was your half marathon?
YOU: Great! I made a PR! I sweat so hard I came back with a major case of saltface. Do you have any soy sauce I could chug?
So, really, saltface is about honor. Tell your friends! Make it happen!

Do you get saltface? Are you willing to make saltface happen?

The Fairest Week In Review: 4/21

JENN: I know you're crunched for time - TELL ME ABOUT YOUR RUNNING.

MOON: WHAT RUNNING?

JENN: THE SWISHY BIT WITH THE LEGS AND THE HUSTLE.

MOON: A LUXURY AT THE MOMENT. ._. That doesn't exist.

JENN: Awww. Got your eyes on the future prize, I hope?

MOON: I don't know what that means...

JENN: That you shall run again, and it will be glorious!

MOON: Yeah, eventuallyyyyy.

JENN: In beautiful Boston! (I assume it's beautiful; I've never been.)

MOON: It's beautiful for a handful of months out of TWELVE. I went last weekend. Required a sweater AND a coat.

JENN: Adventures in snowy running, then!

MOON: I will not concede to snow running.

JENN: That's fair. Neither will I, really. I am a treadmill devotee in the name of temperature control.

MOON: It's more the falling. Slipping, rather.

JENN: Also a good point.

MOON: I've slipped on ice more times than I care to recall.

JENN: Eek. Yeah, no thanks! BUT. Good thing summer is just on the horizon! I ran outside this week and everything.

MOON: I have been along the Charles a few times, but I can't remember how good the shade is... If there's shade then I'm all set for a nice route for the summer.

JENN: Awesome!

Also awesome: the roundup.

- Elbowglitter tackles race day anxiety.
- The Disney Nerds chomp their way through DCA's Food & Wine Festival.
- The Disney Tourist Blog points out the worst and best attraction replacements of WDW's history. BRING BACK ORIGINAL FIGMENT!
- WDW for Grownups snacks around Epcot.
- ImagiNERDing highlights a nifty 1971 WDW brochure. I want a tattoo of the line art.
- Gluten Free in Orlando has allergy-friendly afternoon tea in the Grand Floridian.
- My Disney Addiction is back at it with the snarky WDW trip reporting and I love it.

In Which Jenn Has More Medals Than Ever Before

A great honor was recently bestowed upon me. LOOK WHO LIKED MY TWEET!

Yes, one flippant comment about the past and you, too, can be best friends with Bart Yasso. (Clearly we're BFFs now, right, Bart? Can I call you Bart?) Incidentally, here's what my cubicle wall looks like now:

<Roy Scheider voice>We're gonna need a bigger wall.</Roy Scheider voice>

Where do you keep your medals? Can your coworkers see them? Do they therefore regard you with a mixture of awed wonder that you don't feel you fully warrant and an irrational fear that you might try to make them run too?

In Which Jenn Is A Truly Cultured Music Student

Look, you can make fun of me all day and all night for being on the Hot Topic mailing list, but their Disney collection is unmatched. So when I got an email informing me that they had just added a bunch of new dresses to their Disney collection, I eagerly clicked through. Cute, cute, cute, I thought, scrolling along, with reasonable but not galvanizing enthusiasm... until I saw THIS dress.

I think we can all agree that I NEED this dress. Under normal circumstance I would slap it on my Christmas list, but then I can't wear it during my November WDW trip, and that's sad. It's sad.

Therefore I may need to buy it ahead of time. After all, I did talk myself out of buying any of the cute but expensive Mary Blair dresses. If I wait for one of those frequent discount codes, it's an economically sound decision... right? Now, if only someone would make a dress themed to Si and Am from Lady & The Tramp, I'd be set.

Play us out, maestro.

Do you like wearing Disney-themed clothing in the parks? Where do you like to source your stash? What's your favorite piece?

The Fairest Week In Review: 4/15

No Moon again this week, guys. :( She's busily packing for Boston. :( :(

In the meantime, I don't have a whole lot to report on the running front. Everything's been fine. I've been experimenting the with the Nikes again, although I think for longer distances I'd better stick with the Brooks Ravennas - I just can't risk the injuries even if it means there's a bit too much support happening for my left foot. Does anything else have one rogue foot that needs support while the other doesn't? Maybe we should start looking into mix-and-match pairs...

I do have a small anecdote regarding WDW, though, which I will share now because it makes me happy. I trust you've heard the rumors that the Tower of Terror is getting a themed bar? Bar like where you get drinks. Well, I told Pat, who LOVES ToT, and we had the following exchange:
ME: The Tower of Terror is getting a bar!
PAT: Why?! I LIKE the seat belts!
ME: ......................... that is the most adorable thing I've ever heard.
Right???

Anyway. Roundup time!

- From Dancing to Running knows it's NOT always the right time for a marathon.
- Black Dog Runs Disney and Prairie Princess Runners offer some great thoughts on running and body image.
- Back at Square Zero teaches us how to get faster.
- Mom's Magical Miles makes race costumes without emptying her wallet.
- The Disney Tourist Blog reports on the state of the Studios today - and beyond.
- Mouse on the Mind gets a haircut in the Magic Kingdom's Harmony Barber Shop. I AM SO DOING THIS IN NOVEMBER.
- A Pinch of Pixie Dust documents her WDW trip in the cutest way possible.
- Frontierland Station stomps around WDW in park-ready shoes.
- The Main Street Gazette plays Poohsticks.

The Last Photos: Walt Disney World, 2008 - 2012

The Disney Hipsters recently did a nifty series highlighting the final photo they took on their Disney vacations. I have neither the photographic skill, nor the effortless style, nor the devastating wit of the Disney Hipsters. What I do have: a bunch of rapidly ageing Disney park Facebook albums and a crippling weakness for nostalgia. And so I give you: The Last Photo From My Disney Albums, Part 1.

Apologies for the quality on these; being from the oldest trips, I don't know where the originals are anymore.

The year: 2008
The companion(s): Moon, Elizabeth, and mutual friend Megan
The title of the album: Who's the leader of the club that's made for you and me?
The why: We spent our last day at the Studios and killed time in One Man's Dream before leaving to catch our train home. Now that it's gone, I kinda miss it.

The year: 2008
The companion(s): Moon
The title of the album: Second star to the right and straight on 'til morning
The why: My dad's a train guy and loves the monorail, so I bought him the play model of the Contemporary for Christmas. Question: WHY did Disney discontinue all the other monorail loop models? Anyway, the box didn't really fit in the airport security bins...

The year: 2009
The companion(s): Unofficial Guide people
The title of the album: Por favor mantengase alejado de las puertas
The why: I'm cheating here a little bit; the ACTUAL last photos in this album were boring, stupid, and pointless pictures in the airport. The last real Disney photo I took was of this poster teasing the coming Club 23, which I enjoyed because I was in fact 23 at the time.

The year: 2009
The companion(s): My grad school friend Diana and her sisters
The title of the album: Practically perfect in every way
The why: This was our rental car. Why did I choose to take a picture of our rental car in the parking lot of the Magic Kingdom? Beats the hell outta me.

The year: 2010
The companion(s): Elizabeth
The title of the album: it's a small world after all
The why: One of the Disney airport gift shops. Clever or just depressing?

The year: 2011
The companion(s): My ex-boyfriend
The title of the album: Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom
The why: Watching the happy people check into Pop Century while suffering quietly in wait for the Magical Express.

The year: 2012
The companion(s): Elizabeth
The title of the album: A magical kingdom with lots of witnesses and great security (yeah Burn Notice!)
The why: We caught the last hour of the Magic Kingdom's Evening Extra Magic Hours. The monorail was shut down; this was our view as our ferry crossed the lagoon.

The year: 2012
The companion(s): Sometimes my cousin and his friend, sometimes random people, sometimes just myself!
The title of the album: There's a great big beautiful tomorrow
The why: More self-torture as I wait for the Magical Express to whisk me back to reality, which seems pretty antithetical to me but whatever.

That's it for this installment! Next time we begin with the trip that started all this nonsense: the 2013 Princess Half!

In Which Jenn Is A Meshuganah & More

Running can come with commentary.

"Sometimes I think this is very impressive. Sometimes I think you might be a bit of a meshugana."
- coworker looking at my cube wall of bibs and medals

"Maybe you're running to much. Maybe you should cut back a little."
- my mom, who thinks I could stand to scale back a bit on the mileage

"Oh, you ran a half marathon in XX time yesterday? I'd still be running."
- this is a surprisingly popular reaction

"You ran a marathon yesterday and you didn't even tell anyone? I would've told everyone. I told everyone when I ran a half marathon!"
- coworker who just ran her first half marathon

"If I had one of those mileage stickers on my car, it would say .01."
- Magic Kingdom security guard noticing my Dopey medal

"I hate running."
- everyone ever

What's the craziest/funniest/annoying-est thing anyone's ever said to you about running?

The Fairest Week In Review: 4/07

JENN: Been getting any running done lately?

MOON: Nope! But exercising, sure, just no running this week.

JENN: That's good!

MOON: What about you?

JENN: Been knocking out my runs. The gym is getting a little old, though. I love my treadmill, but I'm ready for summer when I will have the schedule to accommodate speed runs and the weather to accommodate running outside if I feel like it.

MOON: I hear you.Who wants to run in a small room that smells when you can clearly see a nice day outside?

JENN: I just want to know I have the OPTION, you know? Like a cat. I don't necessarily want to eat my food right now, but I want it in the bowl in case.

MOON: Speaking of cats: we ran out of wet food this morning. These don't care if there's normal, boring food in the bowl. They want the real food. There is unrest here. No peace since 8am.

JENN: Well, send up a flare as necessary and the Allies will storm the beaches.

Jenn may have recently watched Band of Brothers and developed
a massive crush on Damien Lewis.

MOON: As long as those allies have some whitefish and tuna in sauce, we have a victory.

JENN: That sounds disgusting. Cats are so weird.

Not at all weird? The roundup. (Or it could be very weird. I'm really not sure.)

- Darlin' Rae can sing 'cause she can run, or possibly the other way around.
- Elbowglitter knows that running cheaters never prosper.
- Megan Biller... just... it's everything I've experienced lately when running. I wrote something along a similar vein here.
- Will Run For Ears suffered great hardship and triumphed during the Princess Half Marathon.
- WDW for Grownups drinks up at DAK.
- Plus the Magic knocks out Epcot scavenger hunts.
- On the Go in MCO offers some Disney groaners.
- easyWDW has more awesome Flower & Garden Festival food reviews from Epcot.
- The Disney Tourist Blog sizes up Disney resort hotel rooms.

In Which Jenn Corrals More Discounts

Discounts! I have more running-related discounts! I'm thinking of making this a monthly thing. Thoughts?

SLS3 is offering their compression foot sleeve for $19.90 - a $20 discount - in exchange for an Amazon review (on the honor system as far as I can tell.). The sleeve is designed to provide arch support and relieve plantar fasciitis if that's your deal. It comes in different sizes so you can customize your fit.

If you're in my neck of the woods, Groupon has a pretty good deal for The Great Inflatable Race on June 18 in DC - $29.99 for registration (normally $75). I for one have never been much for this sort of obstacle course thing, but if it's your bag then it's a worthwhile expenditure.

Also for my locals: run the Navy-Air Force Half with me! Prices went up on April 1, but you can bring them back down by $10 with code ACTNOW201. Code will also work on the 10k but the discount is only $5 in that case.

Another race you can run with me is the Zooma Half Annapolis - use code CYNTHIA16 to get 10% off. This code also works on any other race in the series, so if there's one in a city close to you, have at it!

Also - and there's no guarantee on this one, but I wanted to share - if you're a Target denizen, I scored a pair of clearance running capris for $8 there yesterday, the fancier kind that used to be $25. They also had a bunch of reasonably cute workout tops in clearance if you're in the market for long sleeves; that is, if you haven't run a million runDisney races and wish desperately they'd look into a different sleeve length.

That's all for this installment! Got a discount I didn't mention here? Sound off in the comments!

The Fairest Week In Review: 4/01

On brief Moon hiatus again, guys. No foolin'! We had a meeting set up yesterday to talk, and then her work schedule changed. :( Ah well. Hopefully we can catch her next week!

In the meantime, I am thrilled to announce that I MADE THE MARINE CORPS MARATHON LOTTERY! I'm IN, baby!

Last year I ran as a fundraiser for the Diabetes Action Team, and while I don't regret the experience for a second, I wouldn't want to run for a charity again unless the expectations were very reasonable - it's just too hard to raise the money. I'm not pushy enough to extract money from people who aren't ready to hand it to me anyway. Major, major kudos to those who can drum up thousands for charities, but I'm afraid I'm simply lacking the talent.

Anyway, I've officially got my sights on Marathon #5! The race schedule is falling into place. Luckily my training is going pretty well; my runs have been decent lately. Goals for the summer include outdoor runs (still too cold and dark right now) and speed runs (not working with my dance schedule during the class semester), but for now I'm plugging away.

And now, as is traditional, I offer you the roundup.

- Black Dog Runs Disney runs for a cause.
- Elbowglitter encourages us all to go to the gym no matter how we think we look.
- The Runner's Guide to WDW highlight's WDW's resort trails.
- Mouse on the Mind hangs out in the DCL spa...
- ...While the Disney Hipsters sit around.
- Main Street Gazette wonders what pricing and WDW mean to us.
- Living A Disney Life considers the logistics of dining at Disney with a big ol' group.
- An Open Suitcase visits The Ganachery at Disney Springs.
- Even The Disney Tourist Blog is one and done on some Disney things.
- Disney Dork Tom hits the Studios' 50s Prime Time Cafe.
