Wrightsville Beach Marathon Madness

The Fairest Week In Review: 3/13

Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to present… a post-marathon body in a state that does not worry me! Okay, that’s a weird thing to say. Let me explain. After the Marine Corps Marathon, my inner knee was doing its weird unexplained one-day-delayed pain thing. After the WDW Marathon, my inner knee was fine but my IT Band, which I THOUGHT I had fixed years ago, acted up a bit. After the Wrightsville Beach Marathon last weekend? I am fine!   Frickin’ IT Band.   Well, to be clear, I am definitely stiff and sore in areas. I do think I have some imbalance...

Welcome back to our recurring winter themed weekly recap: Jenn Is Cold. Here’s another cold weather running tip! I ran into a lot of trouble with my phone battery dying in the cold a couple years ago. It was recommended that I use my body heat to keep my phone warm, but easier said than done when pockets large enough for a phone tend to be the outermost layer, right? Pants and jackets are where I’ve mostly found them. Fine if it, like, kinda cold, but less helpful when the temperature dips below 25 degrees. So here’s what I’ve been...

The Fairest Week In Review: 2/28

Hoooo boy. It has been a WEEK. And it’s not even over. Hell, it’d been a week by Tuesday. Are we experiencing time dilation? I’m fairly certain I’ve been at work for several years now. AS PER USUAL. I feel like I’ve been running for several years now, too – which is probably because I have. But I think I’m starting to experience a little burnout. Last weekend I meant to do 9 miles but only managed to drag myself out for 7. Which is perfectly acceptable – it’s about taper time for my next marathon anyway – but...

The Fairest Week In Review: 2/20

I recently read that endurance athletes require MORE sleep than the average person. In this way I have not been optimizing my training as a runner. Do not follow my example re: sleep. However, I am not without redeeming qualities. For example, I have found a new way to adapt to running in the cold! Do you like to mess with your music while you run, but your supply of touch-sensitive gloves is limited? You only need one designated tech hand – split the touch pair, stick a regular glove on your non-tech hand, and voila! You just doubled...

The Fairest Week In Review: 2/13

Longtime readers of this blog know that there was a time when I abhorred running outside, clinging to the blessed safety and climate-control of the treadmill. Eventually I conceded that running outside was probably good practice for, y’know, races, which tend to be – wait for it – outside, but winter was definitely spent in the gym. And then, THE UNSPEAKABLE. My gym closed. I transitioned to running outside 90% of the time… and I didn’t hate it. Then I came to rather like it. Now I consider it my norm. That being said: you can take the girl off...

The Fairest Week In Review: 2/05

It’s been pretty chilly around these parts the past couple weeks, and while THIS week is thawing out nicely, I know fickle nature is bound to come right back at me with the winter chill in a week or so. It’s this kind of nonsense that makes me bound and determined to move south, people!  Ah, memories. Anyway, as naturally cold reptile of a human being, I have a hard time dressing for winter runs. Logically I know that the act of running will warm me up, but I dread those moments on the street corner waiting for my...

The Fairest Week In Review: 1/30

And so we enter the Long Dark Tea Time of the Soul (copyright Douglas Adams, 1988).  I don’t know if this ever happens to you, but lately my GPS has been acting a little haywire? Which is frustrating. And it’s been really cold and unhelpful lately, weather-wise (it’s sleeting as I type this). And I’ve been researching wedding venues and I can’t find anything because as it turns out I don’t like mansions or barns and it’s like ALLLL mansion and barns for, like, a million dollars and anyway they’re booked solid for the next millenium. And I don’t...

The Fairest Week In Review: 1/16

Once again, it’s all behind me. I can’t believe I have to wait another year to run the Walt Disney World Marathon. A year! A WHOLE YEAR! How am I supposed to enjoy life when I know that I could be enjoying it much more if only I were limping through the ESPN Wide World Of Sports?! On a more serious note, I touched on this a bit via Twitter, but I wanted to extend my heartfelt thanks to the TSA and air traffic controllers for working for no pay during the furlough. My little heart longs for the WDW Marathon,...

The Fairest Week In Review: 1/09

Hello humans! Do you know what time it is? I bet you do. It’s… WALT DISNEY WORLD MARATHON PREP TIME! Yes, my very favorite race is this Sunday, and I am hella jazzed. Also I am tapering. Behold, the workout log:  Sunday | rest We drove down to Wilmington, NC with some friends for the New Year’s Eve weekend. I thought about bringing my running stuff, but I was experiencing some very minor knee irritation and decided to take the rest days. Part of me was a little bummed – there was a lovely river walk nearby that would’ve made a killer...
