Uh, I Forgot How To Run On A Treadmill

The last time I had used a treadmill? Oh, early March 2020. And gee, can you think why? OH, ONCE I LOVED A TREADMILL There was a time in my life when the treadmill was nearly the ONLY way I ran. Hills? Terrain? Weather? I didn’t know them. All I knew was the inside of a gym and the consistency of the treadmill. Those who claimed to hate the thing, that it made running so much harder, only served to render me befuddled. WHY? You could put on TV, plunk a water bottle down in the cupholder, and begin....

In Which Jenn Reviews Planet Fitness

When my old, walking-distance gym’s lease was bought out, I was presented with a dilemma. All the reasonably close gyms were expensive – like $100+ per month expensive. Or there were cheaper options a lengthy walk away. Or for very little money, I could drive… to Planet Fitness. Which is where we are today. I have historically relied pretty heavily on the treadmill for my training. In fact, there was a time when I hardly ever ran outside at all. But I slowly came around to face the truth that real terrain and inclines are what really train you for better...

In Which Jenn Runs 20 Miles Thanks To Jeopardy

I didn’t have to do it. There were a million reasons not to. I had the remains of a splinter in my heel. I suspected I might be fighting off a very very low level cold. I’d already run a 17 miler, and that’s been enough marathon prep in the past, right? But it was on the schedule, so I did it: my 20 mile training run. Normally I knock out my good-marathon-prep-mandatory 20 miler during the National Capital 20 Miler. This is a race put on by a local running club in bare bones fashion; no medals, few...

The Fairest Week In Review: 9/06

And so marathon training begins: Sunday | rest End of that wedding weekend I mentioned last week. Spent most of the day either chilling with friends or driving home. Monday | ran 5.59 miles outside in 60 minutes Tuesday | walked 2.3 miles outside in 40 minutes; 25 minute workoutThere was no ballet this week, so I did a little workout on my own time – ab work and arm work and such. Fun fact: jump lunges are the devil. Wednesday | ran 5.85 miles outside in 60 minutes This run was significantly helped a long by a girl...

In Which Jenn Hates Being Emergency Stopped

Have you ever had a training run where everything just kept going wrong? Like, nothing truly catastrophic happened, but multiple little annoyances piled up until most of your energy was sourcing from general pissiness? Let me walk you through this run I had a couple weeks ago: My alarm goes off at 5:40am. The temperature is perfect for an outdoor run. I get up, slap on my clothes, put in my contacts, put my keys in my hidden pants pocket, and am munching on my Vitamuffin when I realize: I forgot to charge my GPS watch. And it’s almost...

The Fairest Week In Review: 7/16

JENN: Did you finally get to run for real last week?! MOON: YES!!! Like, FIVE! While going a month without running was saaaaad, at least I know I truly love to run. Or, at least, that’s what I’m telling myself. Glass half full. JENN: Yay! Are you running around your new neighborhood or hitting my friend the treadmill? MOON: Your good friend the treadmill. JENN: Awww. Always there for us, the treadmill is. Best friends. MOON: I have gone for a few walks with my umbrella, but I find that I often run into things/people, so I figure it’s best to not run with the umbrella....

The Fairest Week In Review: 5/12

JENN: Tell me about your week in running! MOON: This week for running was a good establishment of Baseline Ability. My mileage was about 23 miles, I think? Lower than it has been of late, but I am doing 5-7 mile runs and trying to never run slower than 6.5mph. This week was a success. Last night I ran 6 miles; 4 at 7mph and 2 at 6.5mph. Speed-wise, that’s pretty good for me! When I’m pretty much dead or tired my baseline speed is usually 5.5-6mph. My goal is to slowly increase my BL speed before I add on any...

In Which Jenn Joins A Real Gym

I have joined a gym. It is not my fault. My new apartment, while lovely in many other ways, does not offer its own gym. Not that apartment gyms are generally that great anyway; in my experience maintenance is spotty and equipment is meager. Still, it’s always been nice to have. I briefly considered purchasing my own treadmill, even though nice ones are expensive, just because I loved the convenience factor. However, the prospect of then inevitably MOVING said treadmill to my next location put me off the idea, to say nothing of what to do in the event...

Jenn’s Long Run Part II: The Actual Running Part

In the immortal words of Dory: We did it! We did it! Oh yeah yeah yeah! (In this particular case, “we” refers to me and my beautiful unicorn sneakers.) My long run was a SUCCESS, guys! An actual, honest to God success! Who would’ve thought? I certainly didn’t think.* My seven miler on Tuesday morning sucked, although I suspect this was a product of both high humidity and the fact that it was MORNING, ugh. Unlike your vast majority of normal runners, I perform much better at night – and on a treadmill. What a weirdo! Yeah, that’s right...

The Fairest Week In Review: 9/30

JENN: How’d the whole running thing go last week? MOON: A confession! I did not run last week… I used only the elliptical. Every day. Because I wanted to finish a book that was really long. JENN: Haha, what book? MOON: Stone’s Fall by Iain Pears. I just wanted to know WHY he fell… Rather disappointed about some of the reveals, but mostly because I saw them coming. I like being surprised. JENN: You should run to audiobooks. MOON: I feel like inserting a Dexter reference to Deb, but I believe I’ve already used that card. Clift should be giving me lots of...
