How To Build A Run Streak Wardrobe With Constantly Varied Gear

You know what I look forward to most as part of my annual Ocean City family vacation? It’s not the beach; it’s not the carnival rides; heck, it’s not even the Thrasher’s french fries. It’s my run streak. Yes, really!

MY VACATION RUN STREAK TRADITION

I’m not normally a run streak kinda girl. Don’t misunderstand – I respect a run streak for sure. But I know me, and I know that I would get way to caught up in the numbers to the detriment of my physical and mental health. Mad props to those it works for! For me, thirteen days is enough.

For the past three years, I’ve crushed 3ish early morning miles on the OCMD boardwalk – so soft and straight and level it’s almost like running on a treadmill. I feel maritime breezes, I smell salt air, and I take in the sights of the boardwalk. Everything’s comparatively quiet; I pick up donuts for the fam after. I couldn’t conceive of a better way to start my vacation day.

Now that I live in Puerto Rico, though, I can’t just cram a metric ton of running outfits into a bag and call myself packed. We now require a flight; we avoid checking a bag and instead bring only the personal item and carry-on bag our airline permits us. That means I have to pack very judiciously – a solid half of which ends up being running gear.

THIS RUN STREAK WARDROBE REQUIRED FORETHOUGHT

What’s a gal to do who wants a fun and varied assortment of running outfits for 13 whole days, but only two small bags to do it with? Time to institute a running capsule wardrobe! ‘Cause when you feel cute you run faster, obviously. Science.

Okay, first the good news: I had an in-unit washer and dryer at my disposable. Total came changer. Still, didn’t want to pack anything more than I needed. I decided to select four sets’ worth of running outfits, with the understanding I’d need to do four loads of laundry over the course of the two weeks. Not too bad.

Oh, and I definitely had to add some of my Constantly Varied Gear pieces to the mix. Their bold patterns in association with some of my more staid, solid apparel would be an optimal combo.

Here’s the kicker, though – I wanted all my outfits to be at least somewhat cohesive, AND I didn’t want to repeat any single ensemble in its entirety. Not that it matters, but the extra challenge made it more fun. 🙂

With all that in mind, I wound up packing the following:

THE SPORTS BRAS

Solid black bra

Solid light purple bra

Knockout comic book print Butterfly bra from CVG

Unleashed tiger print Vista bra from CVG

Vacation run streak sports bras shorts and socks

THE SHORTS

Solid black shorts from Brooks

Solid orange shorts from Old Navy

Knockout comic book print pocket shorts from CVG

Unleashed tiger print Daydream shorts from CVG

THE SOCKS

Red over-the-knee socks from FP Movement (blue and orange but only I could really tell if something matched or not)

White and green over-the-knee socks from FP Movement

Two pairs ankle socks from Heyoboy

Vacation run streak hats and sunglasses

THE HEADWEAR

Three hats from Sprints – floral, lightning, and strawberry

Black headband from HUAHC

Two pairs black sunglasses from Goodr – Glam G and Amp G models

THE EXECUTION

Armed with this exciting collection of running essentials, I touched down in Ocean City ready and raring to go. Well, mostly ready. A freak knee injury had me a teensy bit worried, but I gave myself plenty of recovery time and it all turned out fine.

Here and there I had to make concessions; for example, I meant to wear my black headband one morning, but rain forced me back inside to grab a hat. I don’t mind running in the rain up to a point, but I hate drops in my eyes.

Aside from those sorts of tweaks, though, I was able to avoid being an outfit repeater on all 13 days. Did every outfit look good? You be the judge!

Fun fact about the white over-the-knee socks: I ONLY wear them on the boardwalk. I love them so much and I don’t want to risk them getting dirty on a regular trail. 😅

RUN STREAK BONUS: IT’S A WARDROBE STREAK!

I intended an alternate array of Constantly Varied Gear workout sets. Either the tiger or comic book was meant to be replaced by the Aurora Borealis Butterfly bra and 5″ pocket bike shorts, which CVG kindly gifted me.

Unfortunately they didn’t make it to me before I left for my vacation. Luckily a neighbor kindly grabbed the package, and we were finally united upon my return. Perfect opportunity for one last special outfit assembly! I took the new set for a seven mile spin the other morning, and even in the sweat-tastic Puerto Rico summer I came home 100% chafe-free.

These are the same models as my Knockout set; read a detailed review. The short version is that I would recommend the Butterfly bra for those small of breast in both cup and band size – or size up. The pocket bike shorts are some of my all-time favorites; I would recommend them to anyone! I like 5″ but 2.5″ (minus the rubber hem liner) and 7″ are also available.

WHY CREATE A RUN STREAK CAPSULE WARDROBE?

Perhaps you’ve come to the end of this blog post without your most essential question answered: WHY? Why put this much effort into carefully curating a couple weeks’ worth of running outfits when you could just as easily throw whatever gear you grab first into your suitcase and call it done?

Well, I’m sure this is not the case for everyone, but I myself find a cute running outfit extremely motivating. New is nice, sure, but even taking the time to put something together that looks pretty adds a little jolt of dopamine dressing to your workout. When the morning feels too early or you’re ten days deep and could use a push, a beautiful print or color combo can be that extra 10% that gets you moving. I intend to bring some of this ethos to my non-runDisney races going forward as well. Give it a try and see if it works for you!
