In Which Jenn Tries Out… Rest Days??

Hey, remember that hip issue I was having last year? And I barely ran all December and showed up to the Goofy Challenges KT-Taped to high heavens but somehow escaped with no pain and thought I’d beaten the issue? WELL IT’S BACK. So I’m taking a rest week. This is an uncomfortable time to take a rest week, as in the current social distancing climate my runs are some of my only real opportunities to be outside. But my hip was really bothering me, so no running for me all week. And I came to a realization. After we...

The Fairest Week In Review: 3/21

Ah, but let us pour one out for Daily Mile. The run tracker I’ve been using for at least five years died yesterday. I finished yesterday’s run and then, like I always do, immediately opened my phone to track my time and mileage. And then I frowned, deleted the Daily Mile app, and shoved my phone back into my pocket. An era has ended. Anyway, anyone have any suggestions for a new run tracking site? Right now I’m looking at Strava because it’s all you ever hear about, but it seems much more complicated. I just want to input...

In Which Jenn’s Dad Offers A Running Insight

My parents don’t have a ton of opinions on my running career. They think the exercise is good, of course, but they’re not into it or anything. They’ve never come out to spectate or what have you. Likewise, they’ve never discouraged me from running either. Their thought process regarding my running is pretty John Oliverian, all told. But occasionally they’ll offer an insight, and here’s a good one from my dad. After the Wrightsville Beach Marathon, my parents and I met up with my honorary aunt and uncle for dinner downtown. “So are you going to go home tomorrow and...

The Fairest Week In Review: 1/23

Oh, post-marathon week off from running, I hardly new ye. Workout recap, go: Sunday | The Walt Disney World Marathon, 26.2 miles around WDW in 5:05:47 Not as good as last year’s, but that race was so magnificent I could hardly expect such a thing to happen every time. As it was this year’s race was pretty damn magical. Monday | gallivanted about WDW More trip reporting to come.  Tuesday | 55 minute ballet class Home. Boo. I wanted to go for a walk but was busy at work and didn’t have time.  Wednesday | rest But I did have...

The Fairest Week In Review: 3/28

Oh, post-marathon run-free, guilt-free week. You come but three times a year of late, but you are so loved. Until we meet again. Let us linger on the workout log so as to better remember our time together. Sunday | restIf you call driving back to Maryland from NC restful. It’s really not that bad until you hit northern Virginia, in which case you may as well be in hell. Monday | walked 2.37 miles outside in 40 minutes, 60 minute ballet class Tuesday | rest Wednesday | rest SNOW DAY!Yes, on the first day of spring it snowed sufficiently...

The Fairest Week In Review: 11/01

Remember that time I waxed rhapsodic about the incredible week of rest that comes after the completion of a marathon? Turns out it’s not nearly as satisfying when you’ve been resting due to injury for weeks anyway.  This workout log could’ve been so gleeful. But instead it’s this. Sunday | rest Monday | rest Tuesday | walked 2.16 miles outside in 35 minutes; 60 minute ballet class Wednesday | walked 2.62 miles outside in 45 minutes; 40 minutes ab and arm workoutThis tweaked my IT Band eeeeeeeeeeeeeever so slightly. Honestly, this thing is so SENSITIVE. Thursday | 60 minute ballet class...

The Fairest Week In Review: 10/25

Needless to say this week was not my greatest triumph. Oh well; next week is rest week too and then after that hopefully I can start getting back to normal. Sunday | rest Monday | 40 minute abs and arms sequence Tuesday | rest I decided, in anticipation of the marathon, to do NONE of my regular exercise this week. No training runs, no walks, no ballet, the idea being this would allow my IT Band to heal. Wednesday | 40 minute abs and arms sequence Thursday | rest Friday | 40 minute abs and arms sequenceThis was also...

In Which Jenn Doesn’t Hurt Herself Worse For Once

During my run last week I experienced some mild knee discomfort, on the side. Just a sort of stiffness, really. It mostly subsided afterward, so like an idiot I just taped it up and ran again the next day. Thankfully this didn’t create a firestorm of pain, but the twinginess definitely did not subside. And so, when my next scheduled run rolled around, I was forced to make a tough decision: do I run or do I take… God forbid… an UNSCHEDULED REST DAY??? Pros: I have a marathon coming up and I don’t want to turn a minor issue...

The Fairest Week In Review: 3/22

Oh man. Post-marathon week. It’s a good week. Sunday | rest dayI ate cookie cake. I only had half and even that was insane. Monday | rest dayTuesday | SNOW DAY rest dayNormally I go to ballet on Tuesdays, but I’ll tell you right now: YOU DO NOT VOLUNTARILY GET ON THE DC BELTWAY IN THE SNOW/WHEN THERE’S BEEN SNOW/WHEN THERE WILL BE SNOW/WHEN SOMEONE HAS RECENTLY SAID SNOW. I very literally spent 7 hours on the Beltway last year because of a half inch of snow. It’s a long story, and needless to say not one I care to...

In Which Jenn Explains The Purpose Of Running A Marathon

Why do I run marathons? Well, let’s see. There’s the sense of accomplishment. There’s the energy of the spectators. There’s the fun of themed races like the WDW Marathon. There’s the pursuit of a new personal record. There’s the motivation to maintain my physical fitness. Is that why I run marathons? No. I run marathons because the week after the marathon, I DON’T HAVE TO RUN AT ALL. I can totally justify taking a full week off. And that week, guys, that week is the BEST. The sleeping in. The hanging out. The complete lack of guilt while you...
