In Which Jenn Shares Her Rarest Character Race Photos

Pat and I were talking the other day about how we hope we can ride Splash Mountain one more time before the refurb starts. Now, I have gone on record as being 100% on board with the overhaul. But still, a final ride-through to say goodbye would be nice.

That got me thinking – once, a long time ago, during the 2016 WDW Marathon, I got a photo with Brer Fox and Brer Bear. It’s the only time I’ve ever seen either character, in the parks or as part of a runDisney event. Perhaps they’ll appear one more time in some sort of goodbye ceremony or what hae you, but I doubt I’ll ever see them again.

And such a quality photo, too!

And that in turn lead me to ponder what other rare characters I’ve caught on the WDW race course. “Rare” can be hard to quantify, of course, depending on Halloween and Christmas parties and how many runDisney races you do a year and what have you, but here are some of the characters I know I’ve only seen that one time:

Friar Tuck on race course
Friar Tuck, WDW Marathon 2015

Villains on race course
Frollo, Evil Queen, and Jafar, WDW Marathon 2019

Evil Queen as Witch, WDW Marathon 2016

Dang, 2016 was really the year, wasn’t it?

Ah, memories. I can’t wait until this stupid pandemic is over and we can all safely go back to running Disney!

Do you have any rare Disney character photos, on course or off? Who’d you catch?

In Which Jenn Can runDisney Photo Dump Again, Hooray!

Despite my better fiscal judgment, I have an WDW Annual Pass once again, and you know what that means, kids – I CAN ACCESS MY PHOTOPASS RACE PHOTOS FOR FREE!

And then I can make you look at them. Wait, no, don’t click away! Don’t you want to read my commentary??? It’s pithy and judiciously deployed, I promise!

For context, if you like that sort of thing:

Arranged in height order.
I spent entirely too long making this. I don’t know what it’s for.
“How horrible our Christmas will be!”
I’m crouching to keep the blood off the saddle.
Wait, is that a period joke? Anyway this photo is terrible.
No, guys, THIS was the best day ever.
Smoke gets in your eyes. Did I say smoke? I meant the sun.

Remember what I said about the happy almost-tears? Yeah.

Did you know I have double-jointed elbows?

In Which Jenn’s Marathon Photos Will Blow You Away

Mini trip report! Read all the posts in this report here.

Did I say I was finished with my WDW Marathon trip report? Just kidding!

See, I let my Annual Pass lapse because I knew I wouldn’t be taking enough trips in the allotted time frame. No doubt I’ll get another – after all, I think we can all agree I have an addiction and I can only be strong for so long. But in the meantime I’m tragically devoid of parks… and perks: restaurant discount, merchandise discounts, and of course, free photo downloads.

Therefore I thought I was out of luck for my marathon photos, BUT – enter the magnificent Kellie, an official MDE buddy who kindly downloaded and forwarded them along. And so I am able to present them to you, on the off chance you want to know what a running Figment looks like, if Figment went through a goth phase.

On that note, I’m going to start with the last photo first, because it is my favorite, and here’s why: my Figment ears have a lot going on in terms of surface area, and enough wind kicked up throughout the race that I had to grab for them a solid five or six times. I was on top of it, and they never got away from me… except for THE VERY SECOND I CROSSED THE FINISH LINE.

And I loved it. Clearly!

More race photos, coming up:

In Which Jenn’s Baltimore Marathon Photos Tell An Epic Story (About Someone Else)

One nice perk the Baltimore Marathon offers its participants is free race photos. No $35-for-a-single-photo-file nonsense here!

Mind you, I usually look, shall we say, less than radiant in my race pics, but of course I always check ’em out anyway. And I was scrolling through the available shots, a saga unfolded.

Let’s start from the beginning. Here I am running along happily, because my IT Band hasn’t started misbehaving and I don’t yet wish I were dead.

And here I am approaching the finish line. I now have an unhappy IT Band and wish I were dead.

Ah, there I am approaching the finish and – wait. Who’s that guy?

Damn, Tormund sure is coming up fast.

BUT NOT FAST ENOUGH. Step on it!!!

Something tells me I am not the focal point anymore.

The weird thing is, even though the dude was CLEARLY right behind/next to/in front of me for a key portion of the race, I don’t remember him at all. I was very busy nursing my IT Band and wishing I were dead. But thanks to the magic of photography, we get a glimpse into what looks like a wildly exciting story about triumph over adversity and shirts. Technology!

In Which Jenn Insists On A Photo In Front Of The Castle

The trip report proper is over, but we’re not done yet – I’ve still got lots of thoughts, including food reviews and photos! You can see all the posts in this report here. Onward!

Having failed in locating a non-swamped PhotoPass photographer outside Spaceship Earth, I was bound and determined to make it happen in front of Cinderella Castle. The closer you are to the castle the longer the lines – but if you’re willing to accept a slightly less impressive backdrop, the photographers further down Main Street are much easier to secure.

And may well be even better – or perhaps it’s only that they have more time without the press of a waiting line. Regardless, when we stepped in front of the camera, I thought we were in for a few perfunctory clicks and off you go. Instead, we were lead through such a lengthy, directed shoot that you could almost believe we payed extra to get these shots. But we did not. It’s just the Disney magic.

Is this the exact same photo? Or are there subtle variations?
It’s hard to tell…

Regrettably, I didn’t get our photographer’s name, but she was an older lady (60ish?) with short hair and a bubbly personality. Look for her!

In Which Jenn & Pat Are Frozen With Fear At The Haunted Mansion

The trip report proper is over, but we’re not done yet – I’ve still got lots of thoughts, including food reviews and photos! You can see all the posts in this report here. Onward!

It was Pat who spotted the PhotoPass photographer, not me. I blazed right past her in my quest to ride the Haunted Mansion, but he saw and asked if I wanted to stop on the way out. Post doom-buggy exit, we pulled off to the side of the path, just pass the pet cemetery.

The mini photo shoot seemed unremarkable. The photographer took the usual pictures – some long shots showing the whole of the Haunted Mansion, some closer up that highlighted our smiling faces, the only hint of our location the curling design of the iron fence.

Finally, the trick shot: “Look scared,” she instructed us. We pantomimed as best we could.

Then we were done. I tapped my Magic Band to connect the photos to my account and we continued on our way.

I was not surprised by the last bit of instructed playacting, being no stranger to “magic shots” or whatever they call them. I assumed the Hitchhiking Ghosts would be superimposed. It was only later, stuck in the Magical Express on our way to the airport, that I accessed the photos and discovered that our picture was so much better than that.

Yeah. I’m pretty sure that isn’t right. But as was pointed out to me on Twitter, maybe they thought we looked cold?

In Which Jenn DID NOT PEE HERSELF DURING THE DARK SIDE HALF, SWEAR

Perhaps you are rolling your eyes already at the subject line of this post. Perhaps you are quite sick of looking at me. Perhaps you have written me off as a narcissist. It’s okay. I understand.

But my Annual Pass expires in December, and with it, my free PhotoPass downloads. Will I ever get another? Maybe. As of now, though, these are the last free runDisney photos I will ever download.

SO NATURALLY IT LOOKS LIKE I PEED MYSELF IN HALF OF THEM.

It’s thigh sweat! THIGH SWEAT!
And possibly some anti-chafing gel? I tend to slather it on for races. Things to rethink…
JESUS CHRIST.

IT’S SWEAT, PEOPLE! SWEAT!

WHY? WHY?? WHY DID I WEAR GRAY INSTEAD OF BLACK? WHY DO I SWEAT BETWEEN MY LEGS?????? WHY IS THIS HAPPENING?!?!?!

Whatever. Girl Moff Tarkin OUT.

In Which Jenn Might Be In Your Disney Photo Album RIGHT NOW

Do you ever wonder, with all your trips to Disney parks, how many random strangers have random photos and video of you?

Billy Collins can explain:

Think about it – all the times you walked into someone’s photo because you didn’t notice the guy several feet away snapping a pic, or the many, many more times you walked behind a group posing. All the on-ride pictures, where your Splash Mountain log is filled out with any number of people you don’t know, and on Expedition Everest when the girl in front of you put her arms up too and her hand is covering your face. How many dads with video cameras have panned the crowd and captured your likeness? How often, really, do you show up on YouTube???

I wonder about that sometimes. And I looked forward to the day that I post a photo with a face you recognize – or maybe the other way around!

The Favorite Photos: Universal Studios, 2011 – 2015

My last retrospective album post focuses on Universal Studios. Here are my favorite photos from there. (See also: First Photos and Last Photos.)

Once again, apologies for photo quality; 2/3 of these are really old.

The year: 2011
The companion(s): Elizabeth
The title of the album: CONSTANT VIGILANCE!
The why: I LOVE SHARKS

The year: 2012
The companion(s): My cousin and his best friend
The title of the album: Mischief managed
The why: David and Sandy talked to this fountain (think the late lamented Push in the Magic Kingdom or the palm tree in DAK) for like 45 minutes. There are different people working it, using different voices, so it’s a hit-or-miss attraction, but if you get the guy with the acerbic wit and deep voice, say hi!

The year: 2015
The companion(s): Sometimes coworkers; sometimes just myself
The title of the album: I solemnly swear I am up to no good
The why: Atmospheric, intriguing, beckoning – everything that makes Diagon Alley truly excellent.

And that’s a wrap. I’ve really enjoyed delving into all my old park photo albums. Got anything else you want me to check out? Favorite, I don’t know, animal photo or castle photo or whatever? Let me know in the comments!
