The Fairest Week In Review: 2/13

Longtime readers of this blog know that there was a time when I abhorred running outside, clinging to the blessed safety and climate-control of the treadmill. Eventually I conceded that running outside was probably good practice for, y’know, races, which tend to be – wait for it – outside, but winter was definitely spent in the gym.

And then, THE UNSPEAKABLE. My gym closed. I transitioned to running outside 90% of the time… and I didn’t hate it. Then I came to rather like it. Now I consider it my norm.

That being said: you can take the girl off the treadmill, but you can’t take the treadmill off the girl. Last week questionable weather led me to complete my pre-marathon 17 mile training run on the treadmill, and it was fabulous. The music! The TV! The readily accessible water and bathrooms!

Oh, friends who despise the “dreadmill” – open your hearts and give it a chance. It’s not a replacement; it’s a tool!

Treadmill warning on this workout recap:

Sunday | ran 7.2 miles outside in 1:15

Monday | walked 2.13 miles outside in 35 minutes; 55 minute ballet class

Tuesday | ran 5.09 miles outside in 55 minutes

Wednesday | ran 3.11 miles outside in 30 minutes

Thursday | walked 2.36 miles outside in 40 minutes; 55 minute ballet class

Friday | ran 17.14 miles on the treadmill in 2:50

Saturday | rest
But I did walk downtown to go wedding dress shopping! Obviously I’m not gonna share the winner, but here are some rejects because who doesn’t like looking at pretty dresses? TLC’s Saturday Say Yes to the Dress marathon is a VITAL part of my pre-race ritual.

I also like pretty blogs; here’s the roundup:

– Elbowglitter is baffled by race cheaters.
– easyWDW has a podcast! Do you think it’ll be acerbic? I don’t.
– The Main Street Gazette lauds Toy Story Midway Mania’s potential for flexibility.
– Speaking of, Disney Every Day can help you top out your TSMM score!
– Mouse On The Mind welcomes the Year of the Pig with Disney pigs.
– EPBOT bids a special adieu to Epcot’s IllumiNations.

The Fairest Week In Review: 1/03

Hi! Hello! It’s been awhile! A very eventful while!

I have two weeks of workouts among other things to list here, so let’s get right to it:

Sunday, Dec 16 | ran 5.29 miles outside in 55 minutes

Monday, Dec 17 | walked 2.4 miles outside in 40 minutes

Tuesday, Dec 18 | ran 5.32 miles outside in 55 minutes; 55 minute ballet class
Last ballet class of the year!

Wednesday, Dec 19 | ran 5.23 miles outside in 55 minutes
Also took the day off and went to visit Elizabeth in Annapolis! They have all sorts of pretty decorations up downtown.

Thursday, Dec 20 | walked 2.1 miles outside in 35 minutes
Last work day of the year!

Friday, December 21 | ran 9.28 miles outside in 1:30
It was a beautiful, sunshine-y day, and Ke$ha powered me through what for me was a magnificent outdoor run.

Saturday, December 22 | rest
Probably I did something Christmas-y? I don’t remember; it was all so long ago.

Sunday, December 23 | ran 5.17 miles outside in 55 minutes
Pseudo-Christmas with my parents since they were going to NJ for proper Christmas. I mostly received money for airline tickets to feed my WDW addiction. I’m very practical that way. >D

Monday, December 24 | ran 3.3 miles outside in 30 minutes
For some reason my planned Christmas Eve run of 5 miles felt insurmountable, but when I offered myself 3 miles instead I was able to get out the door.

Tuesday, December 25 | rest

Wednesday, December 26 | ran 3.22 miles outside in 30 minutes
Thus beginning my traditional post-Christmas 5K run streak. Also, it was my birthday. And also, Pat asked me to marry him. NBD. (!!!)

Thursday, December 27 | ran 3.2 miles outside in 30 minutes

Friday, December 28 | ran 3.48 miles outside in 35 minutes
Took the opportunity to run in a different part of the neighborhood.

Saturday, December 29 | ran 3.25 miles outside in 30 minutes
Also took the cats to the vet, where Minxie HOWLED with an uninterrupted fury like a banshee with a butthole (she REALLY hates getting her temperature taken).

And that catches it up! Hoo, boy. Things are HAPPENING, guys. It’s nice! And you know what happens next? THE WDW MARATHON!!! 33 is shaping up to be my year!

Anyway, who wants to go wedding dress shopping?

Roundup, play us out:

The Fairest Week In Review: 5/16

HELLO! I’m coming off an AMAZING weekend. Moon – remember Moon? – she got married! In the same place Will Smith got married if that helps you envision it!

She had the most gorgeous dress and a lovely ceremony and good food and awesome people and a great after-party and I got cake and champagne and made a joint toast with my co-maid o’ honor Elizabeth and everything was magnificent.

I still got my runs in for the week, though! I can prove it:

Sunday | ran 10.27 miles outside in 1:45

Monday | walked 2.41 miles outside in 40 minutes; 60 minute ballet class

Tuesday | ran 5.28 miles outside in 55 minutes

Wednesday | ran 5.17 miles outside in 55 minutes

Thursday | walked 2 miles outside in 35 minutes; 60 minute ballet class
Actually I’m not sure how far I walked because my GPS went haywire and started logging ridiculous speeds, so I just went with the minimum distance I tend to achieve along my usual walking route in the usual amount of time.

Friday | ran 5.3 miles outside in 55 minutesAnd then it was off to Baltimore for wedding shenanigans!

Saturday | rest
I love cake.

Seriously, LOOK AT MOON’S DRESS!!!!

Ugh. Insurmountable. If I ever get married I may as well do it in a potato sack, because why bother?

Wait. What are we doing again? Week in review? Right! To the roundup!

The Fairest Week In Review: 5/09

Ummmm, hold on just a second. I need to say something.

Thanks, I just needed to get that out of my system. We can do the workout log thing now.

Sunday | ran 10.1 miles outside in 1:45

Monday | walked 2.26 miles outside in 40 minutes; 45 minute ballet class

Tuesday | ran 5.42 miles outside in 55 minutes

Wednesday | ran 5.29 miles outside in 55 minutes

Thursday | ran 5.28 miles outside in 55 minutes
No ballet class, so I moved my run up a day.

Friday | walked 2.29 miles outside in 40 minutes

Saturday | rest
I picked up my bib for the Wayfarer Half. because for some reason they give you a full month to get it? Which is nice, although I did kinda miss the expo experience. And then I went to Elizabeth‘s birthday party and discovered that I’m really good at a board game called Meeples Circus. I wander if there’s a career path in that.

I’m not sure if I’ll get my usual long run in this Sunday, but it’s for the BEST reason: my girl Moon is getting married this weekend! 😀 😀 😀 I’m looking forward to pretty dresses and champagne and cake and hopefully not drinking too much champagne before my speech but definitely drinking it after.

I’m taking Pat as my plus one, sorry. But maybe you can fill your time with the roundup instead?

The Fairest Week In Review: 11/17

JENN: All right! So, I understand no running has occurred but you have an exciting reason?

MOON: Well, running occurred before Tuesday, but on Tuesday… Well, it’s not that exciting, really. I just fell on the street.

JENN: Oh no! Are you okay?!

MOON: The fall was pretty nasty. Phone, keys went flying (although I kept my shoes) My hip got pretty smashed. I still can’t lift my leg. I’ve discovered this past week that you kind of need your hip for most things.

Official FROA injury mascot.

JENN: Yeah, it’s helpful… Have you been checked out?!

MOON: So, I called Christian [bf = med student]. It definitely wasn’t broken because I could still get up and everything, so I decided to wait on getting it looked at. I also had to drive to Long Island on Thursday morning and had work pretty much until that time. This is a terrible excuse, but I had a wedding to attend, dammit.

JENN: Ah, yes, wedding cake and pretty dresses are VERY IMPORTANT.

MOON: Eighteen course Chinese banquet? Yeeeeeah. Well, more like five for me since most of it was meat, but still. I’m glad I went. The wedding was awesome. I heard the best vows of my life. I also got to dog sit!

JENN: So lucky!!!

MOON: Yeah, it was pretty awesome. The only downside was a lot of walking.

JENN: So how’s your hip now?

MOON: Still limping, but I do feel improvement. I had packed all my running gear because I knew I would finally have a few days of relative ease but, that didn’t happen.

JENN: Awww. In a couple weeks, once your hip has healed – maybe over the holidays!

MOON: I had just gotten my run back onnnnn.

I know. 🙁 I can relate – last year it totally sucked when I busted my foot.

JENN: I’m sorry. 🙁 I hope it gets better soon!

MOON: So, let’s hear about you!

JENN: Nothing much to report – week after the Quarter Marathon (recap coming up tomorrow) so I was kinda making up for lost miles. Plan to do one more light-ish week this week and then the week after that I’m gonna jump back in training for the WDW Marathon.

Speaking of running and Disney… to the roundup!

The Fairest Week In Review: 4/22

Just me for the week in review this time around – Moon and I were at a wedding for much of the weekend and then there was Easter and basically we just haven’t had time to chat. Well. We had time to chat. But it was about other things.

Sample conversation topic: This vineyard makes great Malbec!

Here’s a general wedding anecdote you might enjoy: several years ago I informed my dad, in a purely hypothetical manner, that if I ever married I would want to elope because I don’t want people to stare at me for hours on end. Despite the fact that I was single and furthermore used the word “if” my dad went into an unexpected panic and jumped straight to a bribe: would I promise not to elope if he paid for a wedding at Walt Disney World?

I’m still saying “if” and I still think eloping would be the most painless way to wed, but it’s nice to have that in my back pocket.

Anyway. Really quick: running. That’s one of the main points of this blog, right? Running. I was in recovery mode from the HILLLLLLLS of the Marine Corps 17.75K, so I mostly went on long walks. But I did run once, and it was a solid sixteen miles, so that counts for something, right? It didn’t even make me want to kill myself! (Except for the first two miles when I tried to run outside. The pollen count proved to be too high for my lungs. I will regroup and try again later.)
