Baltimore Marathon VS Marine Corps Marathon: An Investigation

You could, conceivably, run the Baltimore Marathon AND the Marine Corps Marathon the same year. They’re never on the same day. They are sometimes on the same weekend, and historically they’re always within a week of each other. This year the two are spaced apart by about a week (Oct 20 & 28), so the feat is a little less daunting than last year, when the guns went off within 24 hours of each other. Perhaps you are one of those who would like to double up. If so, class dismissed! But if you want to run one or the other but not...

In Which Jenn’s Baltimore Marathon Photos Tell An Epic Story (About Someone Else)

One nice perk the Baltimore Marathon offers its participants is free race photos. No $35-for-a-single-photo-file nonsense here! Mind you, I usually look, shall we say, less than radiant in my race pics, but of course I always check ’em out anyway. And I was scrolling through the available shots, a saga unfolded. Let’s start from the beginning. Here I am running along happily, because my IT Band hasn’t started misbehaving and I don’t yet wish I were dead. And here I am approaching the finish line. I now have an unhappy IT Band and wish I were dead. Ah,...

The Fairest Week In Review: 10/25

Needless to say this week was not my greatest triumph. Oh well; next week is rest week too and then after that hopefully I can start getting back to normal. Sunday | rest Monday | 40 minute abs and arms sequence Tuesday | rest I decided, in anticipation of the marathon, to do NONE of my regular exercise this week. No training runs, no walks, no ballet, the idea being this would allow my IT Band to heal. Wednesday | 40 minute abs and arms sequence Thursday | rest Friday | 40 minute abs and arms sequenceThis was also...

In Which Jenn Recaps The Baltimore Marathon

I ran this race with my heart. I want to be absolutely clear that when I say this I mean it metaphorically, because “I ran this race with my heart” is just a nicer way of saying “my physical body failed me.” And with that cheery start, let’s dive into a recap of the Baltimore Marathon! My morning began with my dad very kindly dropping me off at Camden Yards, the site of the race start. (Always encourage your parents to live near airports and large race events.) I was uncertain what times the roads would close so I...

In Which Marathon Time Is Upon Jenn Once Again

Last week I dreamed that for some reason I thought the Baltimore Marathon was a virtual race I could complete on the treadmill. But then I was in the city and people were running a real course! I thought if I changed into my running gear really fast I could make it to the start line, but I kept getting sidetracked and then I heard an announcement that the start was now closed and then I woke up. So it must be marathon time! Yes, marathon #8 is upon us – this Saturday I will run the Baltimore Marathon....

In Which Jenn Is Running The Baltimore Marathon

Surprise! I’m running the Baltimore Marathon! Maybe it’s not that surprising, given that it showed up among the possibilities when I wrote a post about which fall marathon to choose. But it might not have been my first choice – if I hadn’t tripped and fallen into a bib. My friend Sarah is also a runner with multiple marathons to her name. Last year she signed up for the Baltimore Marathon but was forced to defer. This year (why? Don’t ask me) she signed up for the Marine Corps Marathon too, based on the assumption that, like last year,...

In Which Jenn Considers Fall Marathons That Aren’t MCM

I swear I don’t actively try to turn conversations with strangers toward running. But it seems to be happening anyway. During a happy hour with some of Elizabeth’s co-workers before the ZOOMA Half, I got to talking about my race schedule. (Did anyone ask beyond “What brings you to Annapolis?” No. And yet here we are.) I talked a little about my winging-it plan, and how that meant that I may or may not run the Marine Corps Marathon this year depending on availability. “Why don’t you just run the Baltimore Marathon?” one of my companions replied. I was doubtful....

The Fairest Week In Review: 8/11

JENN: How was your running last week? MOON: Running was good! JENN: Have a route in your new neighborhood? MOON: If by “route” you mean the fact that I get in the elevator and go to floor 7 where the gym is, then… a resounding yes! JENN: Haha, any plans to venture outside or too much Orioles traffic? MOON: Hmmm, sooooo. I would love to run outside because I could go from my apartment building down to the Inner Harbor, through Harbor East (if I can manage to dodge all the fancy valets and such…), to Fells and then back. I’ve done it once and...

In Which Moon Has Had A Lot Of Caffeine & Wants To Run A Marathon

For the past two days I’ve been asking myself, “Why do I tend to begin all my posts with a preface?” And… this one even breeches into metapreface territory. I’m prefacing my preface with this thought about prefacing. I’m not sure why I do it. Maybe I just don’t post enough. Maybe this is the universe’s subtle hint that I need to be more proactive on the blog (all eyes go to Jenn for that one…). OK, off I go! I would like to preface with this (sigh. I even thought about making a pun here, but I’m terrible at jokes): I have...

In Which Jenn & Moon Try To Choose A Marathon

Hi there! Jenn here. The following is a conversation Moon and I had a couple days ago wherein we attempted to pare down our choices for Moon’s first marathon. We did not originally write it as a blog post, but I thought it might be an interesting insight into the factors that affect the decision – finances, timing, course, etc.JENN: Any marathon-y thoughts lately? MOON: I’ve been leaning towards the Baltimore Marathon. Because it occurs around my birthday, I though maybe asking my parents to help with the fees as a present. JENN: So how hilly is this thing? Maaaaaaybe...
