In Which Jenn Assembles An EVE Disneybound

The full trip report is over, but the details still need filling in. Read on for more May 2021 WDW fun!

Wall-E & EVE

Before our trip even started, I was being a total weirdo asked Becky if she would be interested in doing some light coordination of our daily park wardrobes. Rather than kicking my Disney Dandy butt to the curb, she sweetly agreed AND did me one better: did I want, she asked, to do a coordinating Disneybound?

Full disclosure: I’ve never actually done a true Disneybound outfit. Shocker! Disney-adorned apparel, yes, always; some of my Disney dresses could even be argued as putting one toe over the line of cosplay (looking at you, Ursula dress). But an actual Disneybound – where you dress up in colors and styles that evoke a character rather than featuring or straight dressing up in a costume as a character – was a new one for me.

Wall-E Meets Up
Reppin’ my two favorite Pixar films.

Obviously I was game, though, and immediately suggested we do one of my favorite Disney-Pixar pairings, Wall-E and EVE. Becky was kind enough to roll with it, and we assigned me to the role of EVE to her Wall-E. (Check out her Wall-E Disneybound outfit here.) We wore our outfits on our Disney’s Animal Kingdom day and got multiple compliments so I’m calling it a success!

Want to put together your own EVE Disneybound? Here’s how I did it:

EVE Disneybound

You’ll want a white base for your EVE, because, well, it’s EVE and she’s all white. If you’re particularly self-conscious, I suppose you could do something black with strong white accents, but I really think all white is the way to go. I wore the “Walk to the Beat” eyelet romper from Free People, which is no longer available on the site, but you can find it on resale; I myself bought mine on eBay. If you’d prefer to avoid something secondhand but want something similar, this one from Forever 21 might do the trick.

Oh, I didn’t include them in my flat lay, but I did happen to have white sneakers as well. I say always prioritize walking comfort when at WDW, but if you happen to want my particular pair you can find them here.

EVE Disneybound

My EVE hat I got from Amazon, believe it or not, for use in a future race costume. The seller I got it from is out of stock, but if you search it looks like there are other vendors. You might be able to find it on reseller sites too.

Alternatively, I know Etsy has EVE hats and ears you could investigate. Or, if you wanna get a little more interpretive, you could do something like blue and white fake flower hair clips. These blue and white ones came from Amazon too

The EVE plant icon pin came from Etsy, in a set with the E pin Becky used for Wall-E. I purchased the 3″ version.

Last but not least, the EVE face mask was printed by Becky expressly for me, because she loves me. She doesn’t currently have masks for sale, but go ahead and favorite her Etsy shop in case she starts. Hopefully we won’t need masks sometime soon but it never hurts to be prepared.

EVE Disneybound

By the way, since my primary life experience is in being a girl, I designed these instructions largely around a girl-type outfit. Feel free to extrapolate if you want to make it more masculine. Or androgynous. Or MORE feminine! Float your own boat, that’s what I always say. After all, EVE can fly under her own power, no?

In Which Jenn Simply Must Dress Up For WDW

I haven’t built up to it as much as I usually do, but it’s true – I’m going to Walt Disney World in the beginning of May! It’s been a nail-biter, what with COVID and vaccines and race cancellations, but I can finally say I’m going home.

And you know me, Disney Dandy that I am: I simply cannot go to WDW without blabbing to anyone and everyone about what I plan to wear. If the clothes themselves aren’t enough to grab your attention, perhaps my experimental attempt at a new photo format will interest you?

Hit it!

So here’s what we’ve got:

  • My “Li Shang’s Training Camp” tank and frankly amazing Mulan skirt – pretty self explanatory.
  • My Pin Up Couture castle skirt and white peasant top, as modeled previously.
  • My Dark Side Half race shirt to be worn on May 4 because, uh, it’s the only Star Wars item of clothing I own. Plus my longline cardigan because it has a vaguely Batuu-like robe quality, right? Please say right. And, of course, no bottoms. Ha! No, I just haven’t quite decided on what I want to do for bottoms – I’m leaning toward a gray pencil skirt but we’ll see what happens when I actually pack. I also have a wildcard polka dot skirt option but that wouldn’t go with the robe. Hmmm…
  • My Marie dress, which is a bit of a ringer – I may switch it out for my Snow White dress at the last minute, but since I’m already packing one more outfit than I should need I have to draw the line somewhere. Normally I would pair it with appropriate Minnie ears but the pink Marie-style bow feels right in this case.
  • My Fantasia 2000 flamingo dress as modeled here, poorly, in bad lighting. That’s how the cool hipster kids do it, right? Um, maybe don’t click that link.
  • My super-cute retro Moana set. This one’s a little more subtle but I just love the styling SO MUCH I have to bring it.
  • My Mickey/Oswald dress, which is my ringer outfit in case I accidentally ruin one or suddenly hate one of my other outfits. Unless I wear it, and then the Marie dress is the ringer. I like options, is basically what I’m saying.
  • My new Ariel tank, which I will wear with bike shorts as modeled here.
  • … And one outfit NOT pictured, because it’s a surprise – I’m going to do a real, proper Disneybound for the very first time! To be revealed after the trip, of course. I would never dream of leaving you hanging like that. Try not to let it keep you up at night.

Technically it’s a little too early to start packing just yet, but I might start anyway. It’s like the Coast Guard say: semper paradis. I bet they’re thinking about WDW when they say it too.

In Which Jenn Is More Than What She Has Become

Self-burn
I need to look inside myself, I guess.

It’s one of the best parts of the whole movie, no? When Simba’s laying there looking up at the stars and Mufasa’s ghost shows up and yells at him. Okay, well, maybe not when I describe it like that, but you know the bit I mean.

I’ve always found the moment strangely moving, although I’ve never been the king of anything. More just the call to be… I don’t know, true to yourself, I guess? I was trying to think of a less cheesy way to describe it, but I can’t. I guess some cheesy things are also accurate.

Anyway, all this is buildup just to say that my little Disney Dandy heart has been longing for a piece of “Remember Who You Are” clothing for quite some time. There’s a lot of it out there, too – tank tops, crew tees, cargo jackets, and more. But none of it ever felt quite right to me.

Until, of course, I found a great sweatshirt on Poshmark and pounced. I love the design of it, I love the colors, I love the readability (believe it or not, some of ’em get a bit too fancy with the fonts), and also, I rather love that it’s a sweatshirt. I have lots of Disney dresses and a fair number of short sleeved shirts, but very little in the way of outerwear. Occasionally it does get cold at Disney and I need to be prepared (January 2017, anyone?).

Lion King sweatshirt

So I picked up in the sweatshirt in a size large, because I tend to like my sweatshirts and outerwear to fit a bit big. It allows for layering and just generally feels cozier, y’know?

That did leave the question of how to style my new prize. Obviously I could toss it over some jeans and call it a day, but I wanted to spice things up a bit. First I went with the classic tuck into some high-waisted shorts, plus some socks to keep things cold weather-friendly:

But then I read an article dedicated exclusively to styling oversized sweatshirts, and one of the suggestions was layering it over a skirt. The girl in the picture had a pleated skirt peaking out of the sweatshirt’s hem. I liked the look, so I tried to replicate it:

Finally, the wildcard look. That plaid miniskirt gave me an idea. You’ve seen sweatshirts and miniskirts, yes, but have you seen sweatshirt with MAXI TUTU???

I doubt I’d ever wear this one around the parks just because of the likelihood of snagging it on something, but it was still fun to swish about. Maybe it would work for one of those progressive dinners around Disney’s Animal Kingdom?

I have some fun race costumes in my back pocket, so swing by in the coming months for more of my Disney Dandy shenanigans!

In Which Jenn Will Be Part Of Your World

My inner Disney Dandy has been thinking about this tank top for a long time.

I have this habit of hemming and hawing over purchases. I go to an online store, I fill my cart, I weed out the stuff I’m not as into until I have a good balance of interest to value, and then… I often do nothing. I am a chronic abandoner of carts.

This is, probably, mostly, a good thing. Helps me save money. Keeps me from acquiring stuff I don’t need – or, more accurately, acquiring more stuff I don’t need. But occasionally I really regret a purchase not made. I can’t stop thinking about it. I go on the website, and it’s sold out. Alas.

This very much happened to me with this Little Mermaid tank from Hot Topic. I lived in my cart once upon a time, but never made it home to me. Still, it would pop up in my head now and again – there’s something very affirmative about that “I don’t know when, I don’t know how, but I know something’s starting right now” portion of the lyrics of “Part of Your World,” and the crochet Ariel elevates the entire piece.

I spent a couple years looking at resale sights like eBay and ThredUp, hoping to score – and I finally found it on Poshmark! I had to take a chance on an extra small, but the gamble paid off because it fits great.

Ariel tank

The only question was: what to wear with it? When I step out of the kingdom of dresses and wade into the swamp of separates, I tend to gravitate toward high-waisted items – I find them more flattering. But you can’t do that with this shirt, as it would obscure too much of those all-important lyrics.

My ultimate solution surprises even me.

Ariel tank

Who would’ve thought I’d ever wear bike shorts outside the athletic arena? Not me! And yet here we are. It’s been a fashion trend for awhile now, and even, like, weirdly flattering…? But aside from the aesthetics, what I really like is the prospect of using those side pockets and ditching a bag. Imagine, breezing past bag check! Form and function. Good times.

Oh, I have a proper tripod now. No more mirror shots! Next time I’ll even take a step to the left and get the fan out of the frame. Also these screenshots are lookin’ a little blurry. I gotta set up the remote clicker. Narcissism has a learning curve, is what I’m saying.

So that’s my latest Disney clothing update. Until next time! Which given my track record could be, like, tomorrow…

In Which Jenn’s Inner Disney Dandy Can’t Be Stopped

Normally around this time of year I would start packing for my Walt Disney World Marathon trip. What, already? Yeah! Just like last year, my holiday visiting would have allowed me to simply roll straight into Walt Disney World with no stop at home in between. I’d need to pack in advance (with, Florida being Florida, plenty of weather contingency options).

Alas and alack, COVID continues to ruin everything. Marathon Weekend is cancelled, a fact that breaks my heart anew daily. Oh, and now my Rivals race is cancelled too. GREAT. But one way to cheer myself up a smidge is by indulging my inner Disney Dandy, and to that end I have a new Disney outfit to share with you today!

Pinup Girl Clothing makes this super cute retro Disney castle skirt – in fact, you may have seen it in The Dress Shop at Disney Springs. PUG was having a pretty darned good sale over the Black Friday weekend, but as I’ve mentioned before I’ve been buying almost exclusively secondhand clothing this year. Luckily I was able to price match it on Poshmark! Bonus: I used funds from sales from my own Poshmark closet to pay for it, so this skirt is sustainable AND never touched my credit card. Score!

Quick note: two weeks ago I purchased a tripod with a remote so I could start delivering some real photos of my outfits, finally putting an end to these 2006-MySpace-cell-phone-in-the-mirror travesties. Unfortunately it has been stuck in Miami since December 1 and I don’t know if it will ever escape and come home to me. I know – I wish I were the one stuck in Florida, but what can ya do. In the meantime, more janky mirror photos below! At least you get to see my cat.

Castle Skirt

Castle Skirt

How freakin’ cute is that? And it has pockets, which is a universally beloved feature. I can’t wait to wear it to the Magic Kingdom, where it will doubtless feel at home, and get my picture taken in front of the castle. Castleception!

That’s a retro beauty that deserves The Twist:

Maaaan, I just wanna go home (aka WDW)… c’mooooon vaccine!

In Which Mickey & Minnie Are On Jenn’s Jeans, K-I-S-S-I-N-G

Hey! Based on the numbers, it seems like you guys actually kinda like it when I ramble on about Disney parks and Disney fashion and wearing Disney fashion at Disney parks. So let’s all geek out over my latest acquisition together!

I found these Mickey & Minnie kissing jeans at Hot Topic literally a year ago, and I think I asked for them for Christmas but didn’t get them. Which is obviously fine – it’d be pretty entitled to assume you’ll get everything you want for Christmas! Curiously, though, I didn’t just use holiday money to buy them myself during the post-Christmas week, as is my wont.

But I think I know why – I challenged myself this year to buy no new clothes. Ah, you think, what an admirably minimalist approach! No, no – what I mean to say is that I’ve bought new clothes this year, just not new clothes. Secondhand, baby! Sustainability!

And whaddya know, I found those exact jeans in my size on Poshmark! And yet, alas, the seller was offering these secondhand jeans for $39, which was more expensive than HT sold them as they are constantly offering discounts. I don’t generally like to pay full price under any circumstances, let alone in a reseller’s market, but the lower offer I submitted was not accepted by the seller. Such is life.

But I couldn’t quite stop thinking about those jeans – I could see them being super cute in the parks, plus for all my copious Disney clothing I own very little that’s appropriate for chillier temperatures. Short dresses? Coming out my ears! Stuff for when Orlando decides to give winter a try? Less so.

Weakened by my vision, I came very close to abandoning my challenge and buying them from Hot Topic anyway when they had one of their 30% off sales. But then I discovered HT wanted like $20 in shipping to Puerto Rico, so buying from there went out the window on principle. I wasn’t gonna break my resolution for a shafting.

Weeks passed – then months. (You guys remember the pandemic, right?) The Poshmark seller of the jeans lowered the price a few times, but never quite enough to tempt me. Then, one day, after I had made some money selling on Poshmark myself and had a smidge of cash on hand, I got a private offer on the jeans – for $12! $12! Plus shipping of course, but it all still came out to less than $19. Hooray!

By now this is probably feeling sort of like when you click on a recipe page and the author has written an enormous philosophical manifesto ahead of the actual recipe and you’re scrolling and scrolling like for heaven’s sake, just give me the INGREDIENTS LIST at least, so anyway, I now own these adorable jeans!

Mickey & Minnie Jeans

I tried them out with some of the Disney masks my mom sent me, and determined the red Minnie one is the best aesthetic fit, Y/N? And my classic Minnie ears, of course. I’m pretty sure these photos qualify me for influencer status anyway.

Me in Mickey jeans

That’s my latest sartorial Disney conquest. I hope I can get to WDW soon and try it out!

In Which Jenn Cheers Herself Up With A New Disney Dress

Ugh, fine. Here’s the post I was gonna write before I was so rudely sidetracked.

Back in simpler(?) times, before the mass cancellation of runDisney race weekends, I elected to cheer myself up with a new dress from the Disney Dress Shop. Disney was offering 30% off all orders for Annual Passholders and it seemed the time to strike.

So I indulged myself in the purchase of a super-cute yellow dress featuring the flamingo from Fantasia 2000. As has been previously documented, I absolutely adore Fantasia 2000, and the flamingo’s tale that goes with Saint-Saens’ Carnival of the Animals finale ranks among the top 2 segments out that exemplary anthology. Should we just watch it real quick? Let’s just watch it real quick:

Right? Right! I never would’ve guessed Disney would see fit to make that little guy a dress but they sure had my number when they did it.

It’s a great dress, too! While I love The Dress Shop, some of their designs can err on the side of frumpy; indeed, the skirt on this one is a bit long. Can’t a girl show a little knee anymore? But the colors are fun, the print is cute, and the cut is flattering. I’m into it!

I wore it out for the first time to dinner a couple days ago. The waitress accidentally spilled Coke on it which was just as well because then, when I inadvertently dumped ketchup and mustard in my lap, I already had club soda and napkins available. And if that ain’t 2020, I don’t know what is. 😭🤣

P.S. Who wrote this?!

In Which Jenn Saw Those Yellow Minnie Ears Coming

 Hey, guys, I’m psychic!

That’s right – I asked the universe for yellow ears and BAM! Two weeks later, Disney serves ’em up. Clearly I am a person of taste with my finger on the pulse of fashion trends. Disney Dandy powers, arise!

Anyway, there’s a new pair of ears I want. Initially I was disappointed by the lack of sequins, but I’m really coming around on the velvet.

Hmmm. Let’s see if I can pull this off again, shall we? What’ll be the next color trends to emerge from the hit-and-miss minds of Disney merchandising execs? Let’s do a trifecta horse race betting style, so as to give myself better odds of winning at least some, I don’t know, internet clout or whatever:

  1. Royal blue
  2. Lime green
  3. Periwinkle (we haven’t done that one yet, have we?)

Brb, just gonna run down to the Haunted Mansion to consult with Madame Leota on this one…

What do you predict will be Disney’s next quote-unquote color trend?

In Which Jenn Shows Off More Disney Dresses

Normally I save my Disney Dandy posts for upcoming Disney trip wardrobe reveals, but I am disturbingly low on upcoming Disney trips. I definitely have some planned, but the first isn’t until January if I’m lucky and it feels a bajillion years away. How am I supposed to replenish my mental health from outside Orlando?!

Anyway. As I was saying, it’s gonna be a minute before I can share a trip wardrobe post, so let’s just pretend, shall we? I’ve snapped up some sweet second-hand Disney finds in the last year or so and I want to show them off.
The first three were all from ThredUp* but I know for a fact that at least two were sold at Hot Topic and I feel like the last one was too? Not that I regularly troll Hot Topic’s Disney clothing selection or anything…
So we’ve got the Snow White collared dress, which particularly eagle-eyed and elephant-memoried Twitter followers might remember from years ago, when I polled the crowd on which of three Disney dresses I should buy for my next trip. I wound up purchasing my Peter Pan dress, but when the previously rejected Snow White number popped up on ThredUp I remembered it immediately/had to have it.
Slightly easier to remember but still a deep cut, longtime readers may recall how I did an entire post on this Marie dress. And then… wound up not buying it. And then when I wanted to they were out of my size. But then I found it on ThredUp and my wardrobe was complete (hahahaha AS IF – Cher Horowitz).
The Frozen cameo heads dress was an impulse purchase during a sale. To be honest it’s a little subtle for my tastes, and I’m not even super intro Frozen (Moana FTW!). But I knew my nieces would dig it, and sure enough when I wore it to Thanksgiving the older one clocked that my dress had Anna and Elsa on it in like ten seconds. Kids know what they like.
And finally, my Baymax dress! There’s a white Baymax costume dress floating around out there that I kinda wish I’d gotten instead, but as we’ve discussed at length before, white shows sweat and black does not. This dress I snagged on Poshmark for a mere $5! If there’s a piece of Disney clothing you wish you’d picked up back in the day, definitely check Poshmark – it may just be hiding there.
Good hunting, everyone!
What are your latest Disney purchases? Are you also bereft whenever not safe in WDW’s loving embrace?

In Which Jenn Luckily Already Has A Splash Mountain Souvenir

No doubt by now you’ve heard about how Splash Mountain in the Magic Kingdom had a 240 minute wait yesterday- for the gift shop. People were queuing up for a legit 2-hour wait to buy endangered ride merch.

Sure, that’s kind of insane, but I do get the urge – Splash Mountain is a great ride, and as much as I’m down for the Princess & The Frog redo for a variety of reasons, I’ll miss it. It would be nice to have a memento. Alas, I’m not sure I’ll be back to WDW before it shuts down for the refurb, thus ruining my chances at both a final ride and a final shopping experience.
But wait! Thankfully I remembered I already have a Splash Mountain souvenir: a t-shirt I picked up in June 2011. If I remember correctly I grabbed it on the very last day of the trip. It’s not the most eye-catching of designs (where are the characters? Why is the color palette so muted? What is the ride name barely legible?), but the fitted crop cut is cute and – this was important as I can be cheap am frugal – it was on sale, which is probably what tipped me into “buy” mode.
Unfortunately, while I have no memory of anything ever happening while wearing it, it hasn’t aged well, which is why it hasn’t made it into a park wardrobe rotation previously. It’s got some weird discoloration on one sleeve and a tiny hole in the upper left near the collar.
I think it might be salvageable, though, with a good steam and some minor modifications – the discoloration doesn’t bother me too much, and I think I can cover over the hole and make it cuter with an iron-on patch. I’m currently trolling Etsy for a such a find, so if you have any recommendations, let me know!
I suppose this would decrease its value as an authentic piece of Disney Parks merchandise of a bygone era, but, I mean, it isn’t in great condition as it is. What is it with me and vintage Disney t-shirts?
If my mission is successful, you may see this shirt in my next Disney Dandy post; I have a brown suede skirt that might go with it well, or some skinny jeans if the weather calls for it. In the meantime, best of luck for those trying to get your hands on a Splash souvenir of your own. Here’s hoping it stays open long enough for us to get those last rides and shopping sprees in!
